Overview

The field of school leadership (or leadership and management) is a vibrant one. Research has shown that the impact of school leaders is second only to that of classroom teachers, when examining school-based influences on student achievement.

While there is no agreement on the ‘best’ or most effective forms of leadership for schools, there is widespread agreement on the importance of not only the influence school leaders bring to bear on their settings but also the importance of leadership at all levels of the school – from the classroom outwards.

As Wales enters into the period of profound change initiated by the new curriculum, school leadership, and the work of school leaders at all levels, has become even more important. The new standards for teachers place an emphasis on leadership and preparation for leadership.
