The importance of place kicking performance in women’s international Rugby Union

A graph

The importance of place kicking performance for points scoring and match outcome in women’s international Rugby Union is currently unknown. Furthermore, place kick difficulty, and the factors which potentially contribute to kick difficulty, have not been considered in women’s Rugby Union. This research uses a large database of women’s international Rugby Union matches obtained over several years to evaluate place kicking success, and to develop a model for predicting place kick success. This model will enable the assessment of the true performance of kickers after accounting for the difficulty of the actual kicks which they have attempted, thus providing a more complete picture of kicker performance. The model outputs can also subsequently be applied at an individual or team level to help inform the tactical element of matches by contributing to the decision-making processes when penalties are awarded in different regions of the pitch and under various different match contexts.
