Biomedical scientist Dr Luke Davies has been successful in the latest round of Health and Care Research Wales funding awards.

A total of 22 new funding grants will support innovative research projects and researchers across Wales, addressing a range of health and social care priorities, with a combined lifetime value of more than £5.07 million.

His project, which has received just over £150,000, will investigate biomarkers for early diagnosis of infection in pregnancy and labour.

Dr Davies, a research track lecturer in myeloid immunometabolism in the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Science, said: “We are delighted to receive this funding. Hosted by Cardiff University, the Maternal Sepsis Project brings together collaborators from Swansea University, the Wellcome Sanger Institute and the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board to research better tools for recognising and managing infection in pregnant women.”

HCRW funding has been granted to a range of research projects aimed at addressing health and social care priorities, while also supporting the development of talented researchers at different stages of their careers.

Its head of programmes Michael Bowdery said: “By investing in both excellent research and the people behind it, we are helping to strengthen Wales' research environment and improve health and care outcomes for the future.”
