The hard work of Swansea University grounds staff to maintain its award-winning green spaces has been recognised once again this year.
The University will now be flying the prestigious Green Flag at its campuses for a ninth consecutive year.
A record 330 parks and green spaces across Wales have been honoured this year and the University is among 93 of those to secure full Green Flag Award status. It is also one of just 14 to receive the supplementary Green Heritage Site Accreditation, supported by Cadw, for demonstrating a commitment to preserving and promoting its unique history.
Judges who visited both the Singleton Park and Bay campuses ruled the University grounds were not only safe, well-maintained and clean but were also welcoming places.
Registrar and Chief Operating Officer Niamh Lamond said: “Winning this award again means such a great deal to all of us here at Swansea University.
“These beautiful green spaces are at the heart of what makes both our campuses so unique. The expertise of the talented Estates and Campus Services team who manage and develop them is appreciated by colleagues, students and the wider community who are all welcome to enjoy them.
“This commitment to ensuring our grounds are maintained in a sustainable and conscientious way is not only appreciated but also the source of great pride.”
The awards, run in Wales by Keep Wales Tidy, are recognised in more than 20 countries and reward only the very best parks and green spaces.
Keep Wales Tidy Chief Executive Owen Derbyshire said: “From flagship parks and vibrant woodlands to historic sites and community spaces, Wales has shown year after year that it has an unwavering commitment to nurturing inclusive green spaces that can be enjoyed by everyone.
“Green spaces play a vital part in supporting the health and wellbeing of communities across Wales and we’d like to thank all the staff and volunteers who play a part in ensuring these special places thrive and can be enjoyed by all.”
This latest honour follows on from the University’s Singleton Park campus being named in the top 10 of all the Green Flag sites in the UK, earning a prestigious People’s Choice award after the public cast almost 36,000 votes for their favourite green spaces.
