The Institute of International Shipping and Trade law (IISTL) has held an event in collaboration with University College of London (UCL), which focused on Autonomous Shipping.

The primary objective was to build on the success of the first collaborative event held in 2021, by deliberating the public international law aspects of autonomous shipping.

In addition to speakers from the IISTL, Professor Simon Baughen, Dr Youri van Logchem and Dr Zoumpoulia (Lia) Amaxilati, the following speakers delivered interesting papers:

  • Frederick Kenney (Director, Legal Affairs and External Relations Division, IMO),
  • Luci Carey(University of Edinburgh),
  • Dr Melis Ozdel (UCL),
  • Cdr Caroline Tuckett RN (Naval Legal Services), and
  • Tom Walters(HFW, Partner).

The event attracted delegates from the UK and overseas and provided a great opportunity for discussing interesting legal issues including the process of amending IMO Conventions, making necessary amendments in UNCLOS, and relevant shipping legislation in the UK.

Speaking after the event, Professor Soyer, the Director of the IISTL, thanked delegates and speakers for their invaluable contribution and indicated that the IISTL is in the process of making arrangements for further collaboration with colleagues from UCL and other academic institutions.
