About

Dr Martin Gill is originally from near Llanelli and obtained a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry from the University of Bristol before a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Sheffield under the supervision of Professors Jim Thomas and Giuseppe Battaglia. Martin stayed in the fantastic city of Sheffield with EPSRC and Wellcome Trust Postdoctoral Fellowships with Professor Carl Smythe before moving to the University of Oxford and the Experimental Radiotherapeutics group led by Professor Katherine Vallis. In 2019 Martin returned to Wales to start his independent research career in the Department of Chemistry at Swansea University. In his spare time, he supports both the Scarlets and Wales and enjoys traveling.

Career Highlights

Research

Research in the Gill group is at the interface of chemistry and biology. Our ambition is to isolate novel chemicals that provide new insight into the molecular function of biomolecules and to apply this knowledge to generate drug candidates and/or imaging agents. We are particularly interested in the cell biology of coordination and organometallic compounds as their unusual molecular geometries and useful luminescent properties present exciting opportunities in chemical biology. This research utilises a range of techniques and methodologies from synthetic coordination/organometallic chemistry and photochemistry to cell/molecular biology and biochemistry. Molecules developed by the group find applications in areas such as drug discovery and cancer research.
