Cultural Perspectives in Modern Languages
Understanding culture is central to learning any language, and this module offers a broad introduction to the rich cultural traditions behind the languages you study. You¿ll explore a wide range of cultural forms - from poetry and novels to film, painting, and drama - and discover how they reflect the societies and historical moments in which they were created. As you develop your ability to interpret and analyse these texts, you will gain essential skills in close reading, essay writing, and cultural commentary. This module also lays a strong foundation for deeper study of cultural and historical topics in later modules.

Barcelona/Buenos Aires
Barcelona is considered to be one of the most cultural and dynamic cities in Spain. We will examine how the city became such a motor of change at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century by considering how Barcelona became a new enterprising European city through the World Fairs, Art and architecture in Modernism, Gaudi and a novel urban environment. We will then look closely at a novel by one of Spain's leading authors, which traces the rise and fall of a character through this new developing city. Finally we will consider how culture and enterprise are used to brand the city again in the 21st century.
Buenos Aires is regarded as the cultural capital of Spanish America and that continent's most European city. We will consider the rise of Buenos Aires in the 19th century (including architectural features) and look at key moments in the city's history: mass immigration from Europe, the birth of tango, the emergence of lunfardo (an Italian-based dialect peculiar to the city) and, in the political sphere, the rise of Personism and the role of Evita.

This module builds on the skills and knowledge acquired in the first year of study, and will equip students with the skills needed to use Spanish in more complex concrete and abstract social and professional environments.
This module aims at building on the skills and knowledge acquired in the first year of study, and will equip students with the skills needed to use Spanish in more complex concrete and abstract social and professional environments appropriate to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It concentrates on developing fluency and accuracy in written and spoken Spanish, so that the student can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. It also aims at establishing a firm grammatical understanding of the language, and extending students¿ vocabulary to read, write, interpret and debate (explaining a viewpoint, giving independent advantages and disadvantages of various options) about topical issues related to contemporary Spanish society and culture. Moreover, the module aims to enhance students¿ employability by systematically developing a personal professional career planning portfolio, providing a sound insight into the world of work. Classes will be conducted mainly in Spanish. There is also a Welsh-medium version of this module.

This module builds on and consolidates the skills and knowledge acquired in MLS260A by concentrating on further developing fluency and accuracy in written and spoken Spanish. This module aims to build on and consolidate the skills and knowledge acquired in MLS260A. It concentrates on further developing fluency and accuracy in written and spoken Spanish appropriate to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It specifically aims at preparing the students for their Year Abroad and/or extend intercultural awareness, widening students¿ vocabulary to read, write and do presentations about topics related to Spain and Latin America. The module also aims to enhance students¿ employability, by training them to do a successful presentation using appropriate IT applications. Classes will be conducted mainly in Spanish. There is also a Welsh-medium version of this module.

Dialogue Interpreting
This module, which builds on the introduction to Interpreting provided in Year 1 by MLT100 Concepts in Translation and Interpreting, will develop practical strategies and techniques for performing Dialogue Interpreting between parties who do not speak each other's language, as well as oral translation of relevant documents at sight. There will typically be a mixture of short lectures on relevant aspects of Interpreting Theory (especially professional ethics), live bilingual and multilingual scenarios, and language laboratory practical sessions in preparation for assessment. The assessment will be two Sight Translations, one in each direction (40%) and one Dialogue Practical Class Test (both directions) in the Lab (60%). A wide range of materials will be available on Blackboard to practice sight translation and interpreting in your own time.

Nod y modiwl hwn yw darparu dealltwriaeth sylfaenol o gysyniadau ieithyddol allweddol sy'n hanfodol ar gyfer astudio Ieithoedd Modern a Chyfieithu drwy gyfrwng y Gymraeg. Nod y modiwl yw atgyfnerthu ac ymestyn sgiliau ieithyddol myfyrwyr a hwyluso eu cynnydd mewn cymhwysedd ieithyddol tra'n sefydlu dealltwriaeth graidd o ieithyddiaeth. Wrth fanteisio ar y tebygrwydd cynhenid a rennir rhwng Ffrangeg/Sbaeneg a'r Gymraeg, bydd darlithoedd a seminarau'n canolbwyntio ar seiliau iaith (geiriau a strwythurau), mecanweithiau penodol pob iaith, a'r ystod o gyd-destunau y maent yn cael eu defnyddio (gan gynnwys technolegau iaith). Bydd archwilio cysyniadau ar draws ieithoedd gwahanol yn helpu dysgwyr i wella eu dealltwriaeth ramadegol o ieithoedd penodol ac agweddau sylfaenol cysylltiedig iaith. This module aims to equip students with a foundational understanding of key linguistic concepts that are essential for the study of Modern Languages and Translation through the medium of Welsh. The module aims to consolidate and extend students¿ language skills and to facilitate their progress in linguistic competence while establishing a core understanding of linguistics. Taking advantage of the inherent proximities shared between French/Spanish and Welsh, lectures and seminars will focus on the building blocks of language (words and structures), the particular mechanics of each language, and the range of contexts in which they are used (including language technologies). Exploring concepts across different languages will help learners enhance their grammatical understanding of both the specific languages and related foundational aspects of language. As well as reinforcing students¿ understanding of elements of Welsh grammar and usage, sessions will help them further develop fluency and accuracy in written and spoken French/Spanish, extending students¿ competence to read, write, interpret and speak about issues related to contemporary French-/Spanish-speaking societies and cultures as appropriate to either level B1+ (for the case of post-A Level students) or level A1+ (in the case of Beginners) of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The module also aims to further enhance students¿ employability prospects by providing a grounding in the use of French/Spanish and Welsh in contexts relating to the world of work, including translation and other language technologies. Classes are conducted in Welsh and French/Spanish. In addition to class work, students are also expected to undertake extensive private study.
