Background

The Kuwait Institute of Scientific Research (KISR) approached Swansea University about a course on advanced thermal analysis of polymers.  KISR were in the process of broadening their research area and were working with a number of key partners and wanted to enhance their capability.

The Challenge

Swansea University were chosen due to their international reputation and the state of the art facilities available at the College of Engineering.

Meeting the Challenge

A suitable course was not available in the standard module catalogue therefore, through close collaboration, a bespoke training course was developed that met the practical requirements of KISR; training on the analysis of polyesters through the use of advanced analytical techniques (DMA, DSC, FTIR and TGA-GCMS).

Successful Outcomes

The course was delivered over a 3-week period and included both theoretical training and time for KISR’s own samples to be run and analysed, closely supported by academics from the College.  The course completely met the training needs of KISR and enabled them to progress onto developing their own testing and research portfolio. The training also resulted in a joint publication by KISR and Swansea University.

"The course delivered everything I was asking for.  I can see many future research opportunities focusing on product development from mechanical recycling routes. Both the Chemistry & Materials Engineering Departments visits have proven to be very promising in sharing future successes with your great group. On the teaching, professional learning and development front, your ability to tailor required courses for professionals, and also aid in future course prospective is amazing.  Through this collaboration I have greatly increased my knowledge of the techniques available and the facilities are excellent. As a result, we are now in discussions about further research collaborations with Swansea University in of waste management." Dr Sultan Al-Salem, Associate Research Scientist
