Carolina is investigating how to improve the health and welfare of farmed lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) used for sea lice control in salmon farming. The project, funded by a KESS Scholarship and Ocean Matters Ltd. in Anglesey, aims to develop a validated Condition and Welfare Index that can be useful for the industry, which focuses on different parameters with attention to the deformities of the ventral suction disc. She is also interested in the prevalence of pathogens in wild lumpfish populations and the role of the microbiome in health/disease and stress.
