David Huw Williams KC was born in Neath in 1964 and brought up in Cimla. His mother was from Llanelli and his father from the Gower. He attended Cefn Saeson and then Dwr-y-Felin schools in Neath, where he developed passionate interests in rugby and music.
His father before him had read Chemistry at Swansea University, and in 1982, David too began studying at Swansea, graduating with a degree in Biochemistry in 1985.
Whilst at the University, David discovered what would become a lifelong passion for drama, and he collaborated with fellow students to write and perform in several productions, including one of the first staged at the newly opened Taliesin Theatre, which, in 2024, celebrated its 40th anniversary.
In 1986, David moved to London, where he continued to act while studying law. He was called to the Bar in 1988 and has been in continuous practice since then. Elevated to King’s Counsel, he has developed a distinguished career as a barrister, with a practice that includes crime and commercial litigation.
David is a donor and active member of the Development Board at Swansea University.
In response to the war in Ukraine, David organised a series of remote law seminars for students whose studies had been disrupted by displacement. These seminars inspired him to develop Songs for Sanctuary, a major fundraising concert featuring leading performers from Broadway and the West End alongside distinguished Welsh artists. Scheduled for next year, the concert reflects David’s continued commitment to the University’s community and cultural life. As curator, he brings together his legal, educational, and creative interests in support of a meaningful cause, with all proceeds dedicated to the University’s Sanctuary Scholarships programme.
