Our Sustainability Team act across the University and externally, to co-ordinate and lead our sustainability programme and deliver the commitments in the Sustainability Strategy 2021-2025. The department was established in 2011 and reports to the Vice Chancellor who holds executive responsibility for sustainability.

Teifion manages the University’s Sustainability team, is a member of the University’s Corporate Responsibility Committee and Health and Wellbeing Board, providing professional and technical knowledge and experience to contribute to the successful delivery of the University’s sustainability and wellbeing agenda. Teifion oversees delivery of the Sustainability and Climate Emergency Strategy and associated OGSM, as well as managing external accreditations and actively working with external stakeholders to integrate sustainability across the region. Specific work areas also include sustainable procurement, technological innovation, engagement, carbon management and the climate emergency.

Victoria Lewis Environment Officer v.c.lewis@swansea.ac.uk 

Victoria is responsible for improving sustainability practice and environmental management across the University and its core operations across our University campuses. Working as part of a team to maintain and deliver our ISO14001:2015 accreditation, Victoria is the key contact for the Faculty of Medicine, Health & Life Sciences, LEAF Labs and professional services. Victoria is also the lead officer for the sustainable lab programme, LEAF.

The Environment Officer is responsible for improving sustainability practice and environmental management across the University and its core operations across the University campuses. Working as part of a team to maintain and deliver our ISO14001:2015 accreditation, the Environment Officer is the key contact for the Faculty of Science & Engineering, Faculty of Humanities and Social Science and professional services.

Fiona Wheatley Waste and Recycling Officer fiona.wheatley@swansea.ac.uk

Fiona is our dedicated Waste & Recycling Officer who strategically oversees the University’s waste contract. She is responsible for ensuring legal compliance, providing waste management guidance, as well as driving improvements in reuse, recycling, and reducing waste production, whilst improving all aspects of waste management across all of our campuses.

Rhia coordinates our sustainability email channels and webpages, and is often the first point of contact in the Sustainability team. Rhia assists in the coordination of key sustainability projects, programmes, and events across the University. Rhia also assists in aspects of waste management systems and processes.

Jayne Cornelius Sustainable Travel Officer j.cornelius@swansea.ac.uk

Jayne is our expert Sustainable Travel Officer and works across the University and with external stakeholders to deliver the Sustainable Transport Strategy. Jayne also manages the transport contracts including our bus services, Santander bikes and Cycle to Work Scheme. Jayne also works with external organisations to integrate sustainable travel solutions across our City region.

Katie Horsburgh Sustainability Officer katie.horsburgh@swansea.ac.uk   

Katie is responsible for improving sustainability practice and environmental management across the University and its core operations across the University campuses. Working as part of a team to maintain and deliver our ISO14001:2015 accreditation. Katie is the key sustainability partner for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science, Students’ Union, Student Services and Catering departments and she coordinates the University’s student and staff sustainability engagement programme: SWell, Fairtrade and our communications plan. In addition to operational sustainability, Katie works with academic departments to enhance graduate prospects in sustainability and green skills through the Global Citizen Award.

Ben Sampson Biodiversity Officer benjamin.sampson@swansea.ac.uk

Ben is our expert Biodiversity Officer working across the University and beyond to improve our very own natural environment. Ben works towards the commitments of the Biodiversity Action Plan, engages with staff & students to promote biodiversity awareness and implement projects. Ben is also responsible for the management of Crymlyn Burrows SSSI.

The Energy and Carbon Manager is responsible for driving emissions reductions and energy efficiency through development and delivery of our Carbon Management Plan. Working at an operational level, the Energy and Carbon Manager works across the whole university and with external stakeholders to reduce our water, energy and carbon.

Gareth Williams Change Agent - Sustainability gareth.williams@swansea.ac.uk   

Gareth writes and co-ordinates content for our communication channels, as well as assisting with awareness campaigns e.g. for biodiversity and Travel. He provides support in delivering face-to-face events and activities for staff and students. Gareth also works alongside the Environment officers to support the ISO:14001 Environmental Management System.

Sustainability Officer (Education & Careers)  

Coordinates mapping of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) for the University, engaging with university academics as part of the Students Organising for Sustainability (SOS-UK) curriculum mapping programme. Collaborating across departments and with external organisations to promote and facilitate sustainability focused events and activities across the University (such as, annual SOS ‘Teach In’, careers fairs, carbon literacy, and Global Citizen Award), to promote embedding of the SDGs across the formal, informal, and subliminal curriculum.

The Sustainability Team are supported to deliver the Sustainability Strategy through an annual budget derived of internal and external funding (e.g. University, HEFCW, Welsh Government & the third sector). The budget changes on an annual basis and is usually between £500k – £1m. In addition, since 2015 over £3m has been invested in carbon reduction projects including: Solar PV installation, Energy Efficiency projects and BMS infrastructure and software.
