MSc Genomic Medicine

My Swansea experience has enabled me to access my dream career. Having an MSc in Genomic Medicine has enabled me to secure a place on the highly competitive NHS Scientist Training Programme and I am now training to be a Clinical Scientist in Genomics. I chose to pursue this MSc because I had already had a positive experience studying Medical Genetics at undergraduate level in the Medical School and had been very pleased with both the course content and the tutors. I chose Swansea University because of the excellent reputation of the Medical School both for teaching and research and because it is close to my home which made it easier to fit life as a parent and teacher around my studies. My three favourite things about Swansea are the beaches, the parks and the people. Studying through the pandemic was a challenge and I did feel that I missed out on the practical aspects of a science degree, but my tutors and I were really adaptable and managed to convert my dissertation to an in silico genome analysis and all of the supporting services were available through remote delivery as well as the lectures and tutorials. I would definitely recommend Swansea as a great place for students as the cost of living is lower than in many other parts of the country, there are loads of places to go out for food and drinks, plenty of options for sports and fitness and not many universities have a beach right on their doorstep. It’s just a great choice.

Have you lived at home during your studies?

I lived at home during my studies at Swansea Uni which was really helpful as I am a single parent so this meant that my daughter could stay at the same school and we retained our friendships and support network.

Have you worked part-time during your degree?

I’m an experienced secondary school teacher so I was able to supply teach locally whilst studying to supplement my income.

Have you accessed student support at Swansea University?

I accessed several courses run by the Centre for Academic Success which I found really useful for developing my academic writing and critical thinking skills.
