About

Caner Sayan is a Lecturer in Policy Analysis at Swansea University. Prior to coming to Swansea, he was a Research Fellow in Water and Resilience at Cranfield University, a Postdoctoral Fellow in Water Security at United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH), and a Research Associate at the University of Dundee. His research is focused on environmental, water and development politics, with a specialisation on environmental justice, political ecology, resilience and politics of transboundary waters. His regional focus is on Middle East and Turkey and Sub-Saharan Africa (South Africa, Kenya, Lake Chad Basin and Congo River Basin).

His single and co-authored articles have been published in several outlets, including but not limited to, International Affairs, Water Alternatives, Energy Research & Social Science, Local Environment and Territory, Politics, Governance.

Career Highlights

Teaching Interests

Caner has extensively taught on International Relations Theories and Global Politics, Development Theories, Global Development and North-South Divide, Global Inequalities, Environmental Justice and Politics of Water both at undergraduate and postgraduate level at Cranfield University, UNU-INWEH, McMaster University and University of Dundee. He has been regularly supervising undergraduate and MA/MSc theses and contributing to the fieldwork design of postgraduate students. He also co-designed an online module on “Water and Migration” for UNU-INWEH’s Water Learning Centre.

He is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. His commitment to participatory, interactive, and innovative approaches in teaching and his engagement with students resulted in him receiving the 2015 Student-Led Teaching Award of the Dundee University Students’ Association in the category of ‘Most Inspirational Teaching from Graduate Tutors’.
