Practice Placement 1
This module gives you the exciting opportunity to step into a real occupational therapy setting and begin applying what you¿ve learned so far. It builds on your Level 4 foundation and introduces you to professional practice through placement. You¿ll work full-time in an occupational therapy service, gaining hands-on experience under the guidance of a registered occupational therapist. You¿ll also explore how technology supports collaboration and improves health and wellbeing outcomes, helping you see how occupational therapy fits into the bigger picture of care.
Before heading out on placement, you¿ll be supported through preparation sessions at university. These will cover what¿s expected of you in the workplace, how to behave professionally, and how to use supervision effectively. During the placement, you¿ll have scheduled call-back days at university to reflect with your peers and tutors, helping you consolidate your learning. You¿ll also be given time for placement-based study, in line with RCOT standards, and will be encouraged to use tools like e-portfolios to track your progress and reflect on your development.
Throughout your placement, you¿ll be an active participant in the team¿working with occupational therapists, other professionals, and service users and their families or carers. You¿ll set learning goals with your placement educator, review them regularly, and take part in supervision to support your growth. You¿ll also explore how occupational therapy uses technology compared to other disciplines and reflect on your experiences through self-rating and feedback. This module is designed to help you build confidence, develop your skills, and understand your role within the wider health and social care system.

Occupational Concepts for Wellbeing and Practice 1
This module is your introduction to the core ideas and ways of thinking that shape occupational therapy. You¿ll explore how the profession has developed over time, and dive into the philosophical and scientific foundations that guide how occupational therapists work. Through topics like occupational science and person-centred practice, you¿ll begin to understand what it means to see people as ¿occupational beings¿¿individuals whose health and wellbeing are deeply connected to the activities they do every day.
You¿ll get to know key models, theories, and practical tools that help therapists assess and support people¿s engagement in meaningful occupations. This includes learning how to analyse activities, adapt tasks to suit different needs, and understand how personal and environmental factors affect participation. You¿ll also explore how occupations are classified across individual, group, and community settings, and how therapists measure performance and balance across the lifespan. These skills will prepare you for future modules that look at what happens when people are unable to take part in everyday life due to illness, injury, or other challenges.
Alongside the theory, you¿ll begin building your professional toolkit. You¿ll learn about forming therapeutic relationships, working in diverse settings, and developing cultural competence. The module also introduces the International Classification of Functioning (ICF) and encourages you to reflect on your learning through portfolio work. This module sets the stage for your journey into occupational therapy¿blending academic knowledge with practical insight to help you grow into a thoughtful, skilled practitioner.
