Doctor as a Practitioner 1
This module provides you with the foundation clinical skills required for safe and effective medical practice. You will develop the ability to carry out basic consultations, communicate effectively with patients and colleagues, perform practical procedures, respond to medical emergencies, and prescribe safely within a simulated and real-world clinical environment. Learning is delivered in a safe, scaffolded, and integrated manner, using case-based sessions, simulated patients, and supervised clinical placements. The module also includes a session on Medicine in Wales led by clinical and academic staff. Clinical skills developed here are reinforced throughout the programme and integrated with the scientific and professional knowledge delivered in the Doctor as a Scientist and Scholar and Doctor as a Professional modules.

This module introduces you to the principles and practice of professionalism in medicine. You will develop an understanding of professional, ethical, and legal responsibilities, patient safety, reflective practice, and inter-professional working. Teaching is delivered through professional practice study days, case-based discussions, classroom sessions, and clinical experiences, enabling students to reflect on their learning and behaviour within both academic and clinical contexts. The module is integrated with Doctor as a Practitioner and Doctor as a Scientist and Scholar, allowing students to connect professional principles with clinical skills and scientific understanding.

The module uses an integrated, scaffolded approach combining case-based learning, simulated patients, supervised clinical placements, and interactive teaching sessions. Learning is closely aligned with the Doctor as a Scholar and Scientist and Doctor as a Professional modules, enabling the integration of scientific knowledge, ethical reasoning, and clinical practice within a longitudinal, spiral curriculum.

Doctor as a Professional 2
This module builds on the foundations established in Year 1, providing students with further opportunities to develop and demonstrate professionalism in medical practice. It focuses on advancing professional values and behaviours, including team working, maintaining professional boundaries, acting as a mentor or teacher, and engaging in reflective practice.
Learning is delivered through Professional Practice Study Days, clinical and expert forums, case-based discussions, and integrated classroom and clinical sessions. Students are encouraged to consolidate prior learning from Year 1 while engaging with more complex scenarios that require application, critical reflection, and ethical decision-making.
The module continues the spiral curriculum approach, integrating with Doctor as a Practitioner and Doctor as a Scholar and Scientist to ensure that professional behaviours are developed in parallel with clinical skills and scientific knowledge. This integration allows students to contextualise professional principles within realistic clinical settings and evolving patient care scenarios.
