About

Nick is a Lecturer within the Department of Media and Communication and co-Coordinator for the MA Communication, Media and Public Relations programme.

Nick joined the department after completing the MA Communication, Media and Public Relations programme, where he now lectures across a range of programmes and cohorts.

Over the years Nick has worked within various branches of the creative sector, previously as a Music Journalist and, in more recent years, a visual creator, specialising in photography and video production. He is still active in the industry alongside lecturing responsibilities at the University, where he owns and manages a photography and video production company, creating digital visual content, primarily video and photography.

MS-126 Creative Media Platforms

This is an introductory module that enables students to engage with a series of practical media elements at an early stage in their degrees. Coming as it does after the TB1 modules that are theory based, this gives students an insight into the more practice-driven approach to the study of media. It also enables them to get an early taste of some of the themes and practices that they might wish to study in more detail in subsequent years. Finally, the skills acquired from this module also enable students to complete future assessments in all modules with an extra dimension of creative skill.
MS-229 Professional Development: Preparing for Work

This module is compulsory for all students who have enrolled or transferred on to the BA Media & Communication or BA Public Relations and Media or BA Cyfryngau a Chysylltiadau Cyhoeddus Year in Industry Placement programmes. It is also open to all media and communication single and joint honours students. The module provides students with the context to critically engage with and access relevant industrial experiences and practices to help develop an understanding of how to gain employment within a professional working environment. Theory lectures and interactive workshops will help prepare students for working as part of a company or institution, as well as working as a freelance. The module focuses on the underpinning and fundamental requisites required to gain, enter and progress effectively through an organizational placement within the media and communication industries or to secure employment in the media and communication industries. Learners will be introduced to: - CV writing, cover letters and application processes - Understanding skill sets and how to match skills to employers' needs - Finding employment and how to research the job market - Assessment centres and interview techniques (how to pitch yourself and be successful) - Workplace fundamentals and Intellectual Property / Confidentiality awareness - Workplace behaviours and expectations - Key employability skills and how to get the most from the placement - How to develop an online presence and how to promote a professional profile - Year in Industry placements ¿ what they are, how to search and how to apply for them.
MS-310 Dissertation Preparation

This module introduces the practice of dissertation writing and research approaches for the study of media forms. texts and systems and their contribution to social life. It begins to explore the breadth of media studies through attention to the ways in which media matter. In what ways, and how significant are the media in the formation of individual identities and in the practices of everyday life? In the more public world, to what extent are media key to providing knowledge and enabling the debate necessary to the practices of democracy? The course enables students to build on their own experiences of media as consumers and users. But it also encourages critical attention to how the field of media studies has historically been forged: through argument and contestation between different academic approaches and disciplines.
MS-311 Dissertation

This dissertation enables students to engage in long term, in-depth research on a topic of their choice subject to the approval of the Department.
MS-M09 Visual Communication and Media Design

The MS-M09 module investigates many aspects of how to effectively communicate visually in regards to marketing, promotion, advertising, branding and PR. Design principles (inc, colour theory, typography, usability, accessibility etc, etc,) are investigated and practically applied in individual student led promotional and branding exercises. These ventures are carried out considering the wide range of media channels now available to businesses and organisations and consequently, due consideration needs to be applied on how best to visually communicate using these channels and differing technological platforms.Media design is not just about creating `eye candy¿, we must consider sensitively the message we communicate and hopefully deliver it in an appropriate style. Additionally we at times also have to deal with complex, large and diverse amounts of information, that need to be communicated following techniques that best convey this material. Assessment for this module is equally weighted between a theoretical reflexive investigation and the practical application of these theories.
