About

Debbie Dalling is a Tutor in the BA Early Childhood Studies programme. Debbie has worked in Education as a Primary School Teacher for 27 years, where she taught across a range of age groups. She has taken numerous roles within the Primary School setting including ALNCo, Early Years Lead, Progression Step 2 Lead, Mathematics and Numeracy Lead and Senior Student mentor. She has a particular interest, and expertise, in supporting children with Additional Learning Needs.

EDC202 Pedagogy in Action

This module introduces `pedagogy¿ and ideas around effective teaching and learning throughout childhood, in ways that support children¿s interests. It will introduce the concepts of `learning dispositions¿ and `working theories¿ and how children make sense of their world when engaging in these. Students will be invited to consider the role of the adult in supporting and extending children¿s individually unique learning pathways through physical and cognitive scaffolding, and challenging conversations that encourage children¿s autonomy. The perspective of learning from children is also explored, where students are encouraged to engage in professional reflection around situations where this might have occurred and consider the benefits of such an approach for life-long-learning. National and international curricula will be explored to critique the role of the teacher in countries other than Wales and to consider the role of Welsh language.
EDC303 Professional reflective practice

This module will prepare students to be reflective in their practice with infants, toddlers, young children and their families. It will support students to recognise the importance of critical thinking in their practice and consider how to use research informed strategies to become an effective reflective practitioner within the early years workforce. Students will have the opportunity to reflect on their own practice in their final year placement where they will be supported to identify an area of personal learning for development, considering its relevance in early years practice to support professional development and employability. The module aim is to understand the important role of the early years practitioner working with children with a range of learning needs and languages (including Welsh), and families as students transition into the workforce or further study.
EDE116 An Introduction to Reflective Practice

This module aims to introduce students to approaches to reflective practice and support them to constructively critique theories and their own practice through detailed observation and analysis. It creates links between theory and practice by relating concurrently taught content to the practice observed and recorded in placement. By utilising the National Occupational Standards as a basis for reflection, it supports students ongoing development of a portfolio of professional practice which identifies current practice strengths whilst identifying their own professional learning targets and steps for success.

It will support students to critically analyse their experiences gained in practical contexts and consider how to use research informed strategies to become an effective reflective practitioner within the early years¿ workforce. Students will have the opportunity to reflect on their own placement experience where they will be supported to identify an area of personal learning for development, considering its relevance in early years¿ practice to support professional development and employability. The module aim is to understand the important role of the early years¿ practitioner working with children, families and the wider community as students¿ transition into the workforce or further study.
EDPM31 Exploring Pedagogy, Curriculum and Assessment in the Primary School

This module develops student teacher¿s understanding of and ability to employ effective strategies for teaching, learning and assessment across the primary age phase. The module will explore how children and adolescents learn, and what factors support and hinder effective learning. Student teachers will also explore the evidence-base around the characteristics of `good¿ teaching and the importance of establishing supportive learning environments. Taught sessions will focus on the application of subject and phase-related knowledge to support an understanding of pedagogy. Student teachers will develop an understanding of the importance of providing a broad and balanced curriculum suitable for meeting the diverse needs of the pupils they teach. Student teachers will examine issues relevant to the wider context of Welsh Government policy on the curriculum and the national frameworks for Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Competence. The module will ensure that students gain an understanding of current legislation, including an understanding of the underpinning four purposes of the curriculum, and Curriculum Cymreig, ESDGC, religious education, Children¿s Rights and the Welsh language. Students will learn about the importance of critical reflection and reflective practice for professional development and school improvement by considering, applying and critiquing reflective models such as Schön and Brookfield. They will apply this critical reflection to their own professional practice, reflecting on their teaching and assessment strategies to ensure they are appropriate in supporting effective learning.
