HSC113
Introduction to Cardiovascular Science
This module introduces students to the theory and practice of cardiovascular science, laying the groundwork for future clinical learning. It focuses on applying knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and instrumentation to understand the principles behind basic diagnostic investigations. These foundations will be built upon in later cardiology modules to support the development of safe and effective clinical practice.
You will explore the anatomy and physiology of the heart and vascular system, including its embryological development, conduction system and cardiac cycle. The module also introduces common cardiovascular pathologies such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, heart failure, and acute coronary syndromes, alongside their associated risk factors.
Practical learning includes clinical theory, simulation, and skills labs. You will gain experience in patient-centred care, communication, and basic evaluation techniques. You will learn the principles and practice of electrocardiography (ECG), blood pressure measurement, and recognition of normal and abnormal cardiovascular signs. This practical approach helps you begin to translate theory into clinical competence.

Acute and Unscheduled Nursing Care (Adult)
This module will develop your knowledge, clinical reasoning, and the practical skills needed to safely assess, prioritise, and manage adults experiencing acute illness or rapidly deteriorating health in unscheduled and emergency care environments. You¿ll critically examine the application of evidence-based practice, pathophysiology, and multidisciplinary team working when responding to dynamic and unpredictable clinical situations. The module integrates theoretical learning with simulation-based education and practice placement experience, support you to develop the advanced clinical assessment skills you¿ll need, including the application of structured assessment frameworks such as the ABCDE approach.
Learning is delivered through a blended approach incorporating lectures, simulation, clinical skills teaching, case-based learning, and practice placements. This integrated learning experience prepares you to apply your theoretical knowledge to real-world acute care scenarios, developing your professional confidence, and preparing you to safely manage complex patient care within contemporary acute and unscheduled healthcare settings.
