Ruth is an innovation academic, supporting the R&D of multinational companies, government agencies and SMEs. Her research focuses on analytical technologies and method development for medical/chemical analysis, with her most recent work concerning environmental medicine, mass spectrometry and sample preparation technology development. She has received grant funding (UKRI, EU, industry, charities etc), supervised postgraduate research students (MRes, MPhil and PhD) and performed consultancy work in separation science and mass spectrometry.

Ruth is a Chartered Chemist, Chartered Scientist, Fellow of The Higher Education Academy and an active member of the British Mass Spectrometry Society, American Society for Mass Spectrometry and Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). She is an experienced analytical chemistry educator holding the position of an RSC qualifications assessor and has trained external parties within industry, government and academia. She supports the Analytical Methods Committee of the RSC generating training and good practice guides as a member and secretary of the Instrumental Analysis Expert Working Group (IAWEG). Ruth also supports RSC outreach as a Chemnet Ambassador promoting scientific education to A-level students.

Ruth is an analytical chemistry educator with over 10 years’ experience delivering undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Specialist subjects include analytical methods for pharmaceutical, environmental and forensic applications, and quality management systems. She has also developed and delivered bespoke training provision in separation science and analytical mass spectrometry for external parties in industry and government.

PM-273 Advances in Toxicology: Pick Your Poison

We are surrounded by substances that may do our bodies harm i.e. poisons. The harm these poisons causes depends on our exposure - the dose. The science of toxicology, a discipline that crosscuts biology, chemistry, pharmacology, and medicine, is based on the principle that the dose makes the poison. This module is compulsory for BSc Medical Pharmacology students and acts as a follow on from PM-147 Introduction to Toxicology: The Dose Makes the Poison. This module will provide students with the opportunity to expand their toxicology knowledge and apply it to three distinct fields within toxicology; analytical toxicology, forensic toxicology and clinical toxicology. Students will learn about the experimental procedures and techniques we employ for the isolation and detection of compounds as well as their effects on biological systems. Students will then learn about the role of employing these methods in the field of forensic toxicology and the role of toxicology within the legal system. Within the module, students will also learn about the role of clinical toxicology and patient presentation following poisoning events and the techniques we have for detection and treatment of toxicology within the clinical setting.
PM-355 Drug Development and Regulation

This is an applications and project management driven module designed to provide the student with an introduction to drug development and the key role of separation science and mass spectrometry within the pharmaceutical industry. This module will introduce Good Laboratory, Clinical and Manufacturing Practice (GLP, GCP, GMP), assay validation (as requested by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)), the need and implementation of SOPs with particular focus on the pharmaceutical and medical industries, and how these correlate with stringent quality control procedures and health and safety existing due to current legislation. The ethical principles of research, including clinical trials and animal research (design, implementation and reporting) will be outlined, as well as the essential nature of the principles of reduction, refinement and replacement for the use of animals in research. Students will also be able to characterize and map the path of a drug from administration, to metabolism and elimination, for critical evaluation of drug design.
PMC100 Chemistry for Biochemists

The module covers transition metals, elements of bio-inorganic chemistry, forensic chemistry, antibody-drug conjugate chemistry, the chemistry of nanoparticles and the chemistry of biosensors.
PMC102 Chemical Analysis: from Composition to Structure Elucidation; an Introduction for Life Sciences.

This module deals with the principles and practice of analytical chemistry and gives an introduction to a number of important instrumental techniques in analytical chemistry for both quantitative and qualitative analysis and structure elucidation.
PMLM00 Mass Spectrometry - basics and fundamentals

This module will enable students to gain a sound knowledgebase of the basic concepts of mass spectrometry including the individual components, linking to modern separation techniques, instrument maintenance, spectral interpretation, and the basis of modern applications such as, compound identification by generating a characteristic mass `fingerprint¿ for the chemical structure and compound quantitation.
PMLM01 Laboratory Measurement Techniques for Medicinal Chemistry and Nanomedicine

This module will enable students to understand the basic and advanced concepts of measurement techniques used in medicinal chemistry and nanomedicine, how they may be applied with relevant methods of detection, gain `hands on¿ problem solving experience and strategic method development for complete bioanalysis according to target molecule characteristics and method application.
PMZM00A A general introduction to small molecule mass spectrometry

This module will enable students to gain knowledge of the basic concepts of small molecule mass spectrometry including typical instrumentation, linking to modern separation techniques, principles of valid analytical measurement and instrument maintenance, spectral interpretation, and the basis of modern applications such as, compound identification by generating a characteristic mass `fingerprint¿ for the chemical structure and compound quantitation.
