About

Alison is a research leader in the study of the organisation and delivery of health services. Health services research is part of Swansea University Medical School’s commitment to engaged, real world research aimed at improving health care provision for the benefit of patients, those working in the field, and the wider public. The health services research team specialises in unscheduled and emergency care, and also deals with initiatives in primary and community care to reduce unscheduled health care use, such as predictive risk modelling and chronic conditions management.

Alison is joint lead for emergency and unscheduled care for PRIME Centre Wales, the research centre focusing on primary and emergency care, funded by Health and Care Research Wales to develop and coordinate research proposals and support researchers http://www.primecentre.wales/.

Alison is primarily a qualitative researcher and often collaborates on mixed methods studies, including those using anonymised linked datasets. She is particularly interested in organisational aspects of health care delivery, including decision making and attitudes to risk in healthcare interactions, implementation of technology, the role of data in commissioning, communication between service providers and patients, and the role of patients and the public in shaping service delivering and the research agenda. She also has research interests in health inequalities, disability, social care, ageing and geographies of health.

She is interested in hearing from any potential new research students with relevant interests.

PM-263 Health Services Research

Health Services Research is essential to find out which treatments work better for patients. It plays an important role in discovering new treatments, and making sure that we use existing treatments in the best possible ways. Research can find answers to things that are unknown, filling gaps in knowledge and changing the way that healthcare professionals work. Ensuring that research is an integral part of Health Services also encourages all professionals to question and rationalise clinical management and creates a culture of continual learning and development. It assists professionals to learn more about their chosen area, to have confidence in the treatments they are offering and to learn from their patients. This module covers the scope of Health Services Research, considers what is needed to make it good quality, and explores how it can make a difference to patients, clinicians and policy makers.
PM-344 Capstone Project

The aim of this module is to provide a capstone experience to students¿ learning, through participating in their own enquiry-based research project, with guidance from an academic supervisor. The project may be laboratory or non-laboratory based, but it will always involve a research question that is drawn from the literature, and focused on a topic relevant to the life sciences. It will ask a research question and involve the critical analysis of research findings. Students will refine their oral and written communication skills to a graduate level through an oral presentation and dissertation on their research findings and conclusions.

In this module, students will develop their research skills by learning how to write a research proposal and prepare for the research dissertation.
PMRM01 Critical Appraisal and Evaluation

This module will explore the key concepts and topics that are related to the research process from defining evidence based practice, reviewing the literature (systematic and narrative), formulating research questions, critical appraisal frameworks, research design (quantitative and qualitative), clinical audit and introduce the students to the application of data analysis.
