About

Alison is a research leader in the study of the organisation and delivery of health services. Health services research is part of Swansea University Medical School’s commitment to engaged, real world research aimed at improving health care provision for the benefit of patients, those working in the field, and the wider public. Alison leads the health services research team which specialises in unscheduled and emergency care, and also deals with initiatives in primary and community care to reduce unscheduled health care use, such as predictive risk modelling and chronic conditions management.

Alison is also the lead for emergency and unscheduled care for PRIME Centre Wales, the research centre focusing on primary and emergency care, funded by Health and Care Research Wales to develop and coordinate research proposals and support researchers https://primecentrewales.yolasite.com/.

Alison is primarily a qualitative researcher and often collaborates on mixed methods studies, including those using anonymised linked datasets. She is particularly interested in organisational aspects of health care delivery, including decision making and attitudes to risk in healthcare interactions, implementation of technology, the role of data in commissioning, communication between service providers and patients, and the role of patients and the public in shaping service delivering and the research agenda. She also has research interests in health inequalities, disability, social care, ageing and geographies of health.

She is interested in hearing from any potential new research students with relevant interests.

PM-295 Population Health Management & Health Services Research

The module examines Population Health Management (PHM), which focuses on organising and delivering projects and programmes predominantly in healthcare systems and organisations, and the research and evaluation projects which aim to improve those systems and people's lives in a clinically effective, cost-effective, and safe manner. This module explores the critical role of Health Services Research (HSR) in improving patient care and the organisation, delivery, equity and sustainability of health care by identifying effective care pathways, optimising the use of existing treatments, and addressing knowledge gaps. It considers what is needed to deliver good-quality ethical research studies, and the routes by which their findings can influence healthcare delivery. The module explores strategies for balancing the competing interests of clinicians, funding bodies, managers, and patients, aiming to improve the overall healthcare system.
PM-344 Capstone Project

The aim of this module is to provide a capstone experience to students¿ learning, through participating in their own enquiry-based research project, with guidance from an academic supervisor. The project may be laboratory or non-laboratory based, but it will always involve a research question that is drawn from the literature, and focused on a topic relevant to the life sciences. It will ask a research question and involve the critical analysis of research findings. Students will refine their oral and written communication skills to a graduate level through an oral presentation and dissertation on their research findings and conclusions.
