About

Alex is a Lecturer in Digital Health (Health Informatics), a registered Mental Health Nurse and a Senior Fellow of Advance HE (SFHEA).

Alex has an extensive background in NHS and independent healthcare services, working across community and inpatient settings in clinical practice, leadership and service management. His experience has shaped a particular interest in communication, human interaction and the ways in which digital innovation can improve the quality, safety and experience of healthcare.

At Swansea University, Alex teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, with particular responsibilities in Health Informatics, digital health and care systems, and professional communication. He contributes to curriculum development, research supervision, academic integrity and research ethics, with a strong commitment to inclusive education and student wellbeing.

His academic and research interests include the integration of generative artificial intelligence into healthcare and education, the application of psychologically informed approaches to communication, and the use of therapeutic principles, particularly Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), to support emotional wellbeing. Alex is particularly interested in developing innovative approaches that strengthen human relationships, enhance educational experiences and support person-centred care.

Teaching Interests

Alex teaches across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Science, with particular responsibilities in the MSc Health Informatics programme. His teaching interests include digital health and care, professional communication, healthcare technologies, and the integration of generative artificial intelligence into healthcare practice and education.

Drawing on his clinical background and specialist training in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Alex is also interested in integrating psychologically informed approaches into higher education. He works to incorporate practical skills that support emotional wellbeing, effective communication and interpersonal relationships into teaching across the Faculty, with an emphasis on their relevance to both students' personal development and future professional practice.

Taught Modules

PM-344 Capstone Project

The aim of this module is to provide a capstone experience to students¿ learning, through participating in their own enquiry-based research project, with guidance from an academic supervisor. The project may be laboratory or non-laboratory based, but it will always involve a research question that is drawn from the literature, and focused on a topic relevant to the life sciences. It will ask a research question and involve the critical analysis of research findings. Students will refine their oral and written communication skills to a graduate level through an oral presentation and dissertation on their research findings and conclusions.
PMIM101 Health Informatics in Context

In this module, students will study the skills required by the professional health informatician with an introduction to information governance, including privacy and the maintenance of confidentiality, data security, legislation, ethical considerations, and current UK and global eHealth strategies. Students will also begin to develop their academic skills in literature searching, the critical evaluation of research literature and reflective practice.¿
PMIM101J Health Informatics in Context

PMIM201 Communications and Coding

In this module, students will learn about communication and communication systems. This will include a study of electronic health records and clinical coding systems. Academic skills are developed and enhanced by an introduction to qualitative research methods.¿
PMIM301 Using Secondary Health Data

Students will study data quality and management, secondary uses of clinical data, service improvement and clinical audit. Academic skills are developed and enhanced by an introduction to quantitative research methodologies. Students will be introduced to statistical software such as R.
PMIM302 Introductory Analysis of Linked Health Data

This module introduces the topic of linked health data analysis at an introductory to intermediate level. The ability to link health and social care data fundamentally underpins the efforts of researchers to study complex health challenges and improve public health, service delivery and well-being. This module offers training opportunities by combining the principles of health care epidemiology with hands-on practical exercises in the implementation of computing solutions for data linkage. The module provides students with a theoretical grounding in the classroom on each topic, followed by a practical exercises. Students use anonymised linked health data files in the hands-on exercises. The computing component of the module assumes a basic familiarity with computing syntax used in SQL and R, and methods of basic statistical analysis.¿
PMIM401 Digital Health and Care Systems

In this module, students will study the information systems & technologies used in health informatics projects and their implementation. These include: networks; the Internet; integrated communications; mobile communications; health information systems. Academic skills are further developed by studying how systematic reviews of literature are undertaken.¿
PMIM501 Knowledge Management

In this module, students will study knowledge management in health care environments. The themes covered will include: clinical decision-making; decision support systems; workflow management; data visualization techniques. Students will study experimental research designs.
PMIM601 Undertaking Health Informatics Research

In this module, students will develop their research skills by learning how to write a research proposal and prepare for the research dissertation.
PMIM701 Health Informatics Research Dissertation

This module builds on the knowledge and skills developed in part one of the course. Students will work independently in order to critically explore and add to the evidence base for a topic of relevance to health informatics.
