ASTUTE 2020 (Advanced Sustainable Manufacturing Technologies) is a multi-university partnership of five Welsh Higher Education Institutions, part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government.

ASTUTE 2020 is designed to stimulate growth in the manufacturing sector across Wales, by applying advanced engineering technologies to manufacturing challenges, driving cutting-edge research, development, and innovation.

Hi, I’m Mike Hackwood from Hackwood Fabricated Solutions.

We are a Newport-based company that has over 30 years of experience in the fabrication of steel and plastics products.

We supply bespoke fabrications to the construction industry and private sector and manufacture using a wide range of materials to suit our client's needs.

The idea for the HDPE (High-Density Poly Ethylene) chambers came a few years ago but obviously, due to COVID, it has been two years still waiting. We’ve seen a massive downturn in turnover in those two years, and I can now say we’ve overly turned a corner.

Our customers were asking us to consider lowering environmental footprints and helping them with designs for different products. We had a good idea of what we needed to achieve but were uncertain on how to achieve it and demonstrate to our customers it met expecting standards.

Our novel support structure is square and rectangular and has additional features like manhole access and inspection pipes. So conventional structural 

calculations are not suitable.

We needed to find a calculation method suitable for our product's specifications.

To find a way to use recycled polymers in our new products we had to make sure non-version polymers are appropriate, understand the potential for material degradation and establish how best to process the recycled material. 

The Hackwood team has an excellent understanding of our needs and we’d pass this on to the ASTUTE team. Together with our combined experience and knowledge, we would be able to deliver a comprehensive and efficient analysis of the HDPE structures.

We needed to test the validity of the simulation results by installing and testing the underground structure, this is what we have been carrying out on-site today.

Due to the lightweight application of the HDPE chambers, the cost is reduced, not only for shipping but time installing onsite. This is a cost-saving right across the board for the client and again with the material being recyclable, it can be recycled once it is used.

Collaboration between industry and academia is an extremely powerful way of overcoming complex engineering problems that lie outside a company's scope of capabilities like ours.

Our project with ASTUTE East is a testament to this since we achieved together what we couldn’t have done on our own.

The knowledge and engineering skills they applied really assisted us and driven our R&D (Research & Development) capabilities far ahead of where we were before our collaboration which will hopefully future-proof the business if this product now goes from strength to strength it will create a good future for HFS and the employees and hopefully grow the business with new people.
