Swansea University’s Department of Modern Languages, Translation and Interpreting has launched a nationwide programme of free A-level workshops and masterclasses designed to enhance language learning and support KS5 curriculum delivery in schools and colleges across the UK.
These outreach sessions are available online or can be delivered in person at the university’s Singleton Park campus.
The programme is highly flexible, with sessions that can be tailored to meet the specific needs of individual groups. Drawing on the wide-ranging expertise within Modern Languages at Swansea University, offerings include, but are not limited to:
- A-level set texts and films.
- Language-specific sessions in French, German and Spanish, alongside introductory tasters in Italian, Catalan, Portuguese and Mandarin Chinese. Welsh language provision is also available for French and Spanish.
- Support for the Independent Research Project (IRP) or UCAS personal statement writing.
- General university taster sessions and subject enrichment workshops.
Dr Federico Lopez-Terra, Subject Lead for Modern Languages, Translation and Interpreting, said: “In a world where building bridges matters more than ever, learning a language is not just a professional asset but an act of awareness that changes the way you see the world and the people in it. Languages open doors that nothing else can.
“At Swansea, we don't just teach languages, we live them with our students. Our provision is grounded in cutting-edge research in translation, AI, and language acquisition, as well as the cultures and communities they carry with them. For pupils joining these sessions, we hope it offers a taste of what that experience feels like and of the many surprising directions languages can take them.”
Project lead and Admissions Tutor Dr Greg Herman added: “We’re delighted to host these free sessions, designed to help young people discover the life-changing benefits of language learning, regardless of where they live or their school curriculum. They also provide valuable evidence of supercurricular engagement for those considering studying languages at university.”
