Professor Peter Stead

Professor Peter Stead

It is with great sadness that we learned of the recent passing of Professor Peter Stead; Swansea University alumnus, former staff member, Honorary Fellow and founder of the Swansea University Dylan Thomas Prize.

Peter’s achievements span his career as an historian, author and editor and reflect the strength of his commitment and passion to the arts in our University, our region and our nation. Here at Swansea University, we were extremely fortunate to have received the benefit of Peter’s outstanding support for our institution; first as an undergraduate, then as a longstanding member of staff, and latterly as an Honorary Fellow.

Peter’s passion and commitment are perhaps best embodied by his efforts to found the Swansea University Dylan Thomas Prize in 2006. Since then, both the reputation and significance of the Prize itself, and its related supporting initiatives such as DylanED, have flourished. Now, as we approach the twentieth anniversary of the Prize, it has become one of the real highlights not only of our own University calendar but also of the literary calendar across the world. Importantly, the fantastic work of DylanED to support the talented young writers of Swansea and Wales continues to play a vital role in the cultural development and richness of our region and our nation.

Peter will be greatly missed by many of us, both within our University community and across the cultural sector in Wales. We extend our sincere condolences to Peter’s wife, Elizabeth, and to his family and friends at this difficult time. A funeral service for Peter, to which all are welcome, will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday 22nd April 2026, at Tabernacle Church, Newton Road, Mumbles, SA3 4AR.  The service will be followed by refreshments at Castleton Chapel, Newton Road, Mumbles, SA3 4BD.

Peter’s legacy is considerable, and our University is committed to ensuring that it endures for years to come. We hope to honour him during this year’s Swansea University Dylan Thomas Prize ceremony on 14th May 2026.
