What is a SELT?

A Secure English Language Test (SELT) is a type of English language test required for visa or citizenship applications in the UK. SELTs assess English language proficiency at different levels, aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Only specific tests and test levels are approved for SELT, and you must take a test with an approved provider. You can book SELTs at various approved test centres and receive results quickly, often within a few days. For more detailed information you can refer to the official UK Home Office website

There are two types of SELT tests we can accept for entry to academic or Pre-sessional English courses at Swansea University: These are IELTS for UKVI and Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic UKVI.

There are a number of different IELTS and PTE tests available. Students wishing to use an one of these tests to demonstrate their English language ability need to use the IELTS or PTE Academic test. However, international students on some university courses will require a UK government-approved Secure English Language Test (SELT), and the IELTS for UKVI and PTE Academic UKVI tests are recognised as a SELT.

Do I need to take a SELT?

If you meet all of the following criteria then you must take a SELT test:

  • You will be studying on a Student Visa
  • You are studying a course that is below degree level. This includes:
    • Pre-sessional English courses
    • Foundation courses below RFQ/NQF 6

If you are studying at degree level or above or are studying on a short-term student visa then you do not need an IELTS or PTE for UKVI test.

How does a SELT test differ from other IELTS or PTE English language tests

There are no differences in the test format or questions. The actual test taken is the same – same content, examiners, format, level of difficulty, scoring and so on.

The key difference is that there are a much smaller number of approved test centres for SELT tests compared to other IELTS or PTE Academic tests.

You IELTS or PTE Certificate will show a UKVI Number if you have taken an IELTS or PTE for UKVI test.

Where can I take an IELTS or PTE for UKVI test?

The tests are available throughout the world, in locations specified by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). You must sit the test in an 'IELTS for UKVI' or ‘PTE Academic UKVI’ test session.

What is the pass mark for an IELTS or PTE for UKVI test?

Whilst certain courses require you to take an IELTS or PTE for UKVI test there is no universal pass mark. The score required will depend on the nature of the course you are undertaking. For details of the level required please refer to the entry requirements for your chosen course of study.
