Lakehead University is located in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Thunder Bay is located on Lake Superior and is not too far from the US border. Average temperatures are around 25 Celsius in summer and -20 Celsius in winter. Lakehead offers excellent programs with a small university experience to ensure students get the support that they need. Outside of the classroom there are a range of things to get involved in from student clubs and academic student societies to playing a sport and cheering on your teams- get involved, have fun and show your Thunderwolf spirit.

It will not be possible to complete a year abroad at this University if you have any assessments, such as supplementary or deferred exams, during the August assessment period at Swansea University.

* Biosciences: for students studying Biosciences degrees (Biological Sciences, Biology, Marine Biology, Zoology)
* Business: for all School of Management students
* Engineering: for all Engineering students
* Geography: includes Environmental Sciences
* Media: includes those studying Journalism, Film and Visual culture

Spaces are not guaranteed, can be limited and all students on a year abroad programme are subject to a university-wide, competitive selection process. 

Important Information

ACADEMIC YEAR: Runs early September to end of April. 

COSTS: The cost of living will vary depending on the type of accommodation and meal plan you select. You may also be charged additional fees such as for bus pass, meal plan and health insurance plans for your time at Lakehead. Your host university will provide more information on additional costs. 

VISA: You will need a Study Permit for your time at Lakehead. The Study Permit application fee is approx. CAN$150. Your host university will provide you with more information about the application process. You must allow enough time to complete the study permit application and for your study permit to be processed and sent to you.

There can be significant delays so please do not leave this until the last minute as you cannot travel to Canada without it. More information is available on our visa and study permit webpage

ACCOMMODATION: On-campus accommodation is available and usually includes a meal plan. Accommodation spaces are limited and students should apply early and by the set deadlines. Off campus accommodation is available but can be difficult to source. Information on living on campus can be found here.

HEALTH INSURANCE: Inbound exchange students will be automatically enrolled and billed for the mandatory health insurance plan (Guard.Me) for a rate of $1.95 CAD per day. This will allow them to access medical services on and off-campus. Students will receive a digital copy of their Guard.Me health coverage by email prior to their arrival in Canada.
