Background

MM Engineering attended a Corrosion and Coating course with the Materials and Manufacturing Education Training and Learning project (METaL), an industry demand-led project aiming to up skill people in the field of Advanced Materials and Manufacturing through the provision of short, 10 credit courses at Level 4 and above. 

MM Engineering, a Port Talbot based business, have a team of industry experts with over twenty years' experience designing and delivering bespoke flood defence products. The company work with many industry sectors including Utilities, Construction, Chemical and Local Authorities.

The Challenge

MM Engineering were commissioned to design and install a custom fabricated stainless steel flood door onto a steel galvanised main frame structure with a very strict brief from the customer that the door must be made entirely from 316L stainless steel, but fixed onto their galvanised structural frame design.

However, any time a bimetallic assembly contains metal systems that are subject to galvanic corrosion, as in this case, the ratio of the cathodic area (stainless steel) to that of the anode (zinc) must be carefully considered.

Meeting the Challenge

The METaL project helped MM Engineering identify the potential problem of bimetallic corrosion and the solution - electrically isolating the stainless steel gate from the galvanised steel framework of the building that would ultimately safeguard the steel employed in both the framework and the flood defence.

Successful Outcomes

MM Engineering put into practice the technical skills and knowledge gained from their attendance of the METaL training module and were able to make design decisions that prevented the problem of bimetallic corrosion arising and enhanced the overall performance of their product for their customer.
