DVLA

Background

As a major employer in South Wales, the Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency wanted to expand the number of skilled IT workers available as they looked to bring their IT operations in-house.

Meeting the Challenge

In September 2015, to face this challenge, the DVLA enrolled 20 of its employees onto the two-year Foundation Degree Programme in Computer Science (FdSc) at Swansea University, a work-based programme open to full-time employees of (typically) private companies.

This degree is fully accredited for the industry-recognised Higher Apprenticeship Framework Level 4 Qualification with many professional benefits for both the students and their employers.

Successful Outcomes

The strategy has helped move the DVLA’s culture toward the digital future.

According to Nigel Willis, ITD Head of Portfolio Control & Capability at the DVLA, "This will directly contribute towards the economic development of our operation through formalising our ‘digital’ skills capability that will expand our current work, attract additional Government service development and delivery activities to the organisation.”

Iain Patterson, DVLA’s Chief Technical Officer, heartily supports the program, both within DVLA and at local universities. Ian said, “We are investing heavily in our people. We have a really strong ecosystem of skills, education and job opportunities which we mash together to put our people back into study to become digital people.”‌
