Background
Swansea University was asked by Chongqing Jiaotong University in China to develop a bespoke training course for a visiting delegation of their academics. Chongqing Jiaotong University is a multidisciplinary university that specialises in branches of civil engineering including bridge and structure engineering, and harbour and waterway transportation, alongside nonengineering specific subjects such as management, science, economics and arts.
The Challenge
Chongqing Jiaotong University wanted their academics to learn about Higher Education in the UK in order to enhance provision at their institution.
Meeting the Challenge
The Academy for Professional Development team worked closely with academics from both universities to develop the course.
Taking on board the needs of Chongqing Jiaotong University, the team created a bespoke course that allowed the delegates to find out first-hand about the learning, teaching, and administration offered by a Higher Education institution in the UK.
The course gave delegates the opportunity to attend workshops, shadow Swansea University staff, attend visits, network with professionals, and observe Swansea University academics teaching.
Successful Outcomes
Delegates were able to further develop their English language skills, particularly the technical language used in engineering, as well as expand their professional network and gain contacts for the future. They acquired knowledge and experience of Swansea University that would allow them to consider and implement alternative practices within their own departments in Chongqing
Jiaotong University.
