The Greatest Need Fund

The Greatest Need Fund is supported by donations from the University’s alumni, staff and parents. The disbursement panel may consist of academic and professional services staff, representatives from the Student’s Union and current alumni/donors.

We strongly encourage applications from individuals belonging to under-represented groups as we actively strive to create a diverse and inclusive environment that values and celebrates all perspectives.

Criteria for funding

Your application should demonstrate at least one of the following essential criteria:

  • Impact a large audience (e.g. through important research).
  • Make a qualitative difference to the student experience.

We would particularly like to see applications for initiatives such as:

  • Seed funding for research
  • Funding for societies and sports clubs
  • Tools and equipment to help promote your outreach and research

We will not normally fund:

  • Individual applications for hardship. Please contact Money@CampusLife for more information on hardship funding.
  • Endowed funds.
  • Events and catering
  • Private companies including your own enterprise project (for funding these types of initiatives, see this page)
  • Other charities (with the exception of Swansea University Students’ Union)

Application Notes

  • Typical value of grants is up to £5,000 though in exceptional circumstances we will consider applications up to £10,000
  • For successful applications, before the funds can be released, you will need to detail the likely impact/outcome of this funding. We may use this for a case study. Please be aware that projects funded by the Greatest Need Fund will feature in our publicity materials. Successful applicants will be required to provide a short report detailing how the funds have been used and the benefits resulting from it. You will be forwarded our ‘Acceptance of Charitable Funds’ policy if your bid is successful and we will follow up with you around 12 months after your funds are transferred.
