Kev is a Welsh entertainer, broadcaster, actor, and community ambassador whose career has spanned more than three decades across theatre, radio, sport, and charitable work.
Born in Swansea in 1961 and raised in the Plasmarl area of the city, Kev developed a strong sense of civic pride from an early age. On leaving school, he pursued theological studies and trained for Christian ministry, attending Bible college before being ordained in 1984. For eight years he served in ministry, preaching and working throughout Britain, before making the transition into full-time entertainment in 1992.
He first entered the world of performance as a children's entertainer and comedian, developing skills that would later form the foundation of his successful stage career. He is best known for his long association with Swansea Grand Theatre, where he has appeared in annual pantomime productions for more than thirty years, his performances as the traditional pantomime dame endearing him to generations of audiences.
In 1993 Kev joined Swansea Sound, where he went on to host the station’s flagship Breakfast Show for nearly three decades. His warm, engaging style and commitment to promoting local events, charities, and community initiatives earned him a loyal following and cemented his reputation as one of Swansea’s best-known broadcasters. Later in his career, he would return to the airwaves with Swansea Bay Radio.
A lifelong supporter of Swansea City AFC, Johns has played an important role in the club's identity as both its chaplain and matchday announcer with his distinctive voice becoming a familiar part of the matchday experience. Drawing on his ministerial background, he has also provided pastoral support and represented the club at community and remembrance events.
Beyond his professional achievements, Kev is widely respected for his charitable and voluntary work. Throughout his career he has championed numerous causes and served as a patron or president of several community organisations.
In 2013, he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to charity. He received one of Swansea’s highest civic honours in 2022 when he was granted the Honorary Freedom of the City of Swansea.
In recent years, Kev has shown remarkable resilience after being diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer. Thankfully, he has overcome the illness and continues performing, broadcasting, and supporting community initiatives.
