Laurence Carpanini is an independent adviser and business owner with some 40 years’ experience in the energy sector. Prior to becoming an independent, Laurence led the strategic development of Smarter Energy Solutions for IBM in Europe, where he played a leading role in defining, communicating, and deploying smart energy systems, working at the interface between strategy and policy, organisation transformation and technology enablement. He has engaged with Governments and Regulatory Authorities in developing smart metering market models; advised on smart energy strategies and programmes; built European consortia in successful bids for innovation funding; and represented IBM on the boards of government and industry organisations.
Laurence was appointed a Lay Member of Council of Swansea University in December 2022, and since August 2024 has been Chair of the Remuneration Committee.
He is also President of the Energy Industries Club; Vice Chair of the Durham University Energy Institute Advisory Board; a Chartered Engineer and Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers; and a Fellow of the Energy Institute.
