ASQ309 Applying Knowledge to Enhance Practice
This module is about developing critical knowledge within a specified area of interest in social work and social care. The primary focus is on conducting an independent literature review on a selected issue or problem experienced by a service user or carer group. Students will be required to locate research evidence and knowledge from a variety of contemporary sources, critically evaluate the contribution of literature within their chosen topic and to identify key themes, issues and debates for the interest of social work audiences. Emphasis will be given to formulating recommendations for enhancing professional practice. Students will consolidate skills in locating and synthesizing research evidence, developing written arguments and using current knowledge to improve and develop their practice.

SW-104 Introduction to Social Work
As a new student embarking on your journey into the world of social work¿this module is your starting point. It¿s designed to lay the foundations for everything that follows in your studies and future practice. In this module, you¿ll explore what social work really means today, and how it has evolved over time. You¿ll look at its place in society¿locally in Wales, across the UK, and internationally¿through historical and comparative lenses. This will help you understand not just where social work comes from, but where it¿s heading. You¿ll also begin to explore the ideologies and issues that shape modern public, social, and political thinking, and discover how these influence the way services are delivered. You¿ll examine how Welsh Government policies, legal frameworks, and professional boundaries come together to shape practice¿especially in settings where different disciplines work in partnership. As you progress, you¿ll begin to see how social work connects with other vital services like education, housing, health, income support, and criminal justice. You¿ll explore the roles of statutory, voluntary, and private agencies, and consider how they support people in their communities¿whether through day-care, residential services, or other forms of care. Most importantly, you¿ll start to understand the real-life challenges faced by people using social work services in contemporary Wales. This module invites you to think critically, ask questions, and begin developing the professional insight that will guide your journey ahead.

Yn y modiwl hwn, byddwch yn archwilio'r hyn y mae gwaith cymdeithasol wir yn ei olygu heddiw a sut mae wedi datblygu dros amser. SW-105 Social Work Services in a Diverse Society: Ethics, Values and Anti-Discriminatory Practice
This module explores the core ethics and values that shape social work practice, with a particular focus on the Welsh context. You¿ll examine how social processes can lead to exclusion and inequality, and how these issues affect people¿s everyday lives and the services they receive. By looking at real-world examples, you¿ll gain insight into the challenges faced by individuals and communities, and the role social work plays in addressing them. Along the way, you¿ll engage with key concepts such as stigma, empowerment, equality, anti-racism, and anti-oppressive practice. You¿ll also consider the legislation and professional standards that guide social work in Wales, including the Care Council for Social Care Wales Code of Professional Practice. This will help you understand not only the ¿what¿ of social work values, but also the ¿why¿ behind them, and how they translate into meaningful practice with different groups. Above all, this module is about developing you as a reflective and ethical practitioner. You¿ll be encouraged to think critically about your own values, explore the historical and philosophical roots of social work, and build the confidence to apply ethical principles in practice. By the end, you¿ll be better equipped to make a positive difference in people¿s lives while upholding the highest standards of care and professionalism.

Mae'r modiwl hwn yn archwilio'r moesau a'r gwerthoedd craidd sy'n llywio ymarfer gwaith cymdeithasol, gan ganolbwyntio'n benodol ar y cyd-destun Cymreig. Byddwch chi'n ymchwilio i sut gall prosesau cymdeithasol arwain at allgáu ac anghydraddoldeb a sut gall y problemau hyn effeithio ar fywydau beunyddiol pobl a'r gwasanaethau maent yn eu cael. Drwy ystyried enghreifftiau o'r byd go iawn, byddwch chi'n cael mewnwelediad i'r heriau y mae unigolion a chymunedau'n eu hwynebu a'r rôl mae gwaith cymdeithasol yn ei chwarae wrth fynd i'r afael â nhw. SW-106 Undertaking and Using Social Work Research for Practice
This module introduces you to the world of research in social work and social care, showing how evidence shapes practice, planning, and decision making. You¿ll explore the different ways information is gathered and used, and begin to understand why research is such a vital part of improving services and supporting communities. You¿ll gain an accessible introduction to qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods approaches, learning how each can be applied to real life social work contexts. From interviews and case studies to surveys and statistical analysis, you¿ll discover how different methods provide unique insights into the lives of citizens and the challenges they face. Alongside theory, you¿ll get hands on experience working with a diverse range of social work and social justice relevant statistical datasets at local, national and international levels and developing ICT skills that are essential for modern practice. By the end of the module, you¿ll not only understand the principles of research but also feel confident in applying them to your own studies and future professional work.

SW-107 Human Growth and Development
This module takes you on a journey through human growth and development across the life course, exploring how people change, adapt, and grow from childhood through to older age. You¿ll discover why a strong understanding of human development is essential for effective social work practice, and how it can help you support individuals and communities more meaningfully. We¿ll look at both traditional theories and contemporary approaches, including the Life Course perspective, which provides a framework for understanding development in context and encourages dialogue across different professional disciplines. Along the way, you¿ll engage with key concepts such as plasticity¿our capacity to change¿and personal agency¿the ability to make choices and influence our own lives. Throughout the module, the emphasis is on practice. You¿ll connect theory to real world situations, considering how knowledge of human growth and development can shape your work with citizens and carers. By the end, you¿ll have a deeper appreciation of how developmental processes impact lives and how this understanding can strengthen your skills as a future social worker.

SW-201 Practice Learning Level 2
The central premise of this module is to enable students to fulfill the requirements of Social Care Wales during their 80 day placement. This will include demonstrating that they are able to meet the required National Occupational Standards (NoS) for a level 2 placement and to uphold the Code of Professional Practice for Social Care Workers. During placement, students will have the experience of working with citizens in need of care and support as well as their carers. Their practice will be supervised and assessed by a practice educator. There will be will attend a `recall¿ day to monitor their experience of placement and their understanding of how the concepts discussed work in practice.

SW-M05 Undertaking & Using Social Work Research for Practice
In this engaging and practical module, you¿ll explore what it means to be `research-minded¿¿a vital skill for any reflective and effective social work practitioner. Together, we¿ll unpack how evidence-based practice informs decision-making, and you¿ll develop your existing knowledge or even learn for the first time about social work research methods. You¿ll dive into social work research case studies from social work researchers, practitioners and Social Care Wales, learning how they designed and carried out research using quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods of data collection and analysis. We¿ll also reflect on the ethical and value-based dimensions of research, helping you understand how to conduct studies that are both rigorous, respectful and in alignment with social work values and ethics. This module isn¿t just theoretical¿you¿ll get hands-on experience working with statistical datasets and digital tools, building your confidence in using ICT for research. By the end, you¿ll be well-prepared to take on your own empirical or desk-based dissertation in the second year of your Master¿s journey.

SW-M14 Social Work Skills and Knowledge in Practice 3
The central premise of this module is to prepare students for the 90 day direct practice placement. The module teaching aims to prepare the students for the academic work which they complete alongside placement, which is in the form of reflective commentaries. The aim is to enable the students to understand critical reflection, its role and relevance in the practice setting and its importance in ensuring best practice. This will be achieved through teaching and discussion to develop skills and knowledge, both in a large group and in seminars. Students will develop skills in linking theory, legislation, anti-discriminatory /anti-oppressive practice and the Welsh context to practice. Students will also develop a better understanding of their learning needs before going out on placement and have a clear understanding of what the expectations are. They will also have opportunity to work through ways of dealing with any problems or difficulties which may arise.

Cyflawnir hyn trwy addysgu a thrafod i ddatblygu sgiliau a gwybodaeth, mewn gr¿p mawr ac mewn seminarau. Bydd myfyrwyr yn datblygu sgiliau cysylltu theori, deddfwriaeth, ymarfer gwrth-wahaniaethol/gwrth-ormesol a'r cyd-destun Cymreig ag ymarfer. Bydd myfyrwyr hefyd yn datblygu gwell dealltwriaeth o'u hanghenion dysgu cyn mynd allan ar leoliad a bydd ganddynt ddealltwriaeth glir o'r disgwyliadau.
