Siân-Eleri obtained a BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science from University of Wales Institute Cardiff. She was awarded a PhD from the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Cardiff University for the investigation of myosin light chain-dependent modulation of tight junction function through the actions of membrane-permeant peptides.
Siân-Eleri has a keen interest in studying ways to increase the intrinsic protection of tissues against pathogens.
Siân-Eleri lectures through the medium of Welsh and English on subjects such as cell biology and laboratory skills.
Siân-Eleri’s research is focused on cellular resilience to bacterial pore-forming toxins. The ability to tolerate pathogenic bacteria largely depends on the resilience of the host’s tissue cells to damage caused by bacterial virulence factors. Therefore, studying ways to improve the intrinsic protection of tissues against pathogens is highly beneficial because “prevention is better than cure”.
This module aims to give students a broad overview of the structure and function of components of the human body, from cells and their organisation to the function of specialised cells in various organs. The role of the specialised cells will be explored using blood as an example. Students will also obtain an appreciation of the cancer cell proliferation and the various causes of leukaemias.
This module will provide students with a broad introduction to fundamental concepts in Eukaryotic cell biology, such as investigating the origins of the cell, the structure or eukaryotic cells, the different types of specialised cells, and cells which help prevent disease. There will be a general focus on human cells throughout the module with some references to other organisms when needed. Students will gain practical experience in identification and differentiation of cells from different human and animal species.

The aim of this module is to provide the student with basic skills required for laboratory research in the field of applied medical sciences. The module will be both theoretical and applied: the student will be instructed in methods essential for data acquisition and analyses but will also actively participate in the laboratory, using broadly applicable experimental techniques. They will also develop skills that are not experimental techniques themselves, but are nevertheless fundamental to the scientific process, such as `lab math,¿ sourcing information, referencing, ethics and health and safety.

The educational intention of the module is to allow the student to consider the contemporary practice of Medicine within the United Kingdom. This will include understanding the professional regulation, financial constraints and societal and personal challenges, within which medicine and other healthcare activities are practiced.
The aim of this module is to provide a capstone experience to students¿ learning, through participating in their own enquiry-based research project, with guidance from an academic supervisor. The project may be laboratory or non-laboratory based, but it will always involve a research question that is drawn from the literature, and focused on a topic relevant to the life sciences. It will ask a research question and involve the critical analysis of research findings. Students will refine their oral and written communication skills to a graduate level through an oral presentation and dissertation on their research findings and conclusions.

This module is for students with an interest in teaching, science communication, and medicine. Students will complete an enquiry-based research project, based within the field of pedagogy or science communication, with guidance from an academic supervisor. Projects may be completed in collaboration with local schools/colleges, community groups, science outreach programmes (e.g. Oriel Science), in clinical/patient settings, or within Higher Education. Students will engage with workshops and digital resources to introduce various themes surrounding pedagogy and science communication to prepare them for their research project. Students will be required to critically analyse their research findings and produce a teaching or outreach activity/resource. Students will refine their oral and written communication skills to graduate level through an oral presentation and dissertation.

Siân-Eleri has established links with the National Botanic Garden of Wales. Where she carries out numerous bilingual science activities for primary school children, for example at the Garden’s science week.
