Ancient Greek can be taken as part of the MA in Classics and Ancient History. This module is designed for complete beginners. It provides a rewarding and engaging introduction to one of the most influential languages of the past, giving you a strong foundation to build on in future study.

Schools work placement: Teaching ancient history and ancient languages
This work placement module teaches students the basic theories and approaches of teaching ancient history and/or Latin/Greek to under-18s, with a focus on improving general literacy skills of pupils. It also provides students with practical experience through 8 - 10 hours of teaching at a local primary or comprehensive school, in teams of 2-5 students. For the moment, the teaching mainly concerns the ancient world (Greeks and Romans): History students are welcome to take this module but you will need to adapt to the teaching content. In different years, different periods from history will be taught. Please contact the Programme Director if you are unsure of whether or not you should sign up for this module.
The specific content of the teaching materials will be discussed with students and the schools at which they will teach. Content will depend on the school's needs. Students should have a basic understanding of the period of history which they will teach.
Please note: part of the transferrable skill set you will be able to develop through this module are communication, team work, and independent organisation of your work load. It is your responsibility to make sure you communicate well with everyone else involved in the project and manage your work load effectively (i.e. the work load should be shared among students) so the schools' project can be successful. Lack of communication and commitment, and/or irresponsible behaviour may result in students being asked to move to another module.
In order to demonstrate your commitment to the module, please make sure you;
1) take initiative in sorting out your teaching timetable with the module coordinator and with the other students before the start of term;
2) communicate clearly about division of tasks in the module with the other students in the first week.
