Dr Melanie Healy is a Senior Lecturer and Deputy Programme Director of the BSc Applied Medical Sciences programme. Melanie graduated from the University of the West of England with a BSc (hons) in Applied Biological Sciences and The University of Nottingham with a PhD in Developmental Physiology.  Melanie undertook her post-doctoral training at the Centre for Reproduction and Early Life, University of Nottingham where she worked to determine the mechanisms by which maternal undernutrition in pregnancy predisposes to later obesity and insulin.  A change in research focus saw Melanie relocate to Swansea in 2009 to undertake a research with Swansea University’s Health Information Research Unit to develop an anonymised population level child health e-cohort.  The Wales Electronic Cohort for Children (WECC) Study is an anonymised e-cohort focussed on understanding and improving health and well-being of children born to mothers’ resident in Wales, through the secondary use of routinely collected data. Melanie has made significant contributions to research development, scientific output and teaching throughout her career and is an experienced author having published in peer-reviewed journals and has presented her work at international conferences. Since switching to Teaching and Scholarship in 2009 Melanie led on the design, implementation, and delivery of a range of postgraduate and undergraduate taught programmes. Melanie is currently Deputy Programme Director of BSc Applied Medical Sciences; Admissions Tutor for BSc Applied Medical Sciences/(with foundation year), BSc Medical Pharmacology, and BSc Population Health and Medical Sciences; and Senior Academic Mentor for undergraduate students across the Medical School. Melanie is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, member of the Physiological Society and local representative of both societies at Swansea University Medical School.
