With an increasing demand for same day consultations for minor illness presentations, both primary and urgent care setting have had to review their work force provision. Traditional roles are developing, and the assessment and management of minor illnesses is a defined example of a changing workforce. The core emphasis of this module is to enable the registered practitioner to recognise what is minor health problem and what requires onward referral. Teaching is delivered using a blended approach and focusses on both face-to-face patient assessment and remote patient assessment reflecting changes in current clinical practice.

With the incorporation of enhanced health assessment skills into current pre-registration programmes, this module has been developed with the aim to provide current registrants an opportunity to enhance their clinical assessment skills within their own workplace. Through the enhancement of clinical assessment skills this will support the development of decision-making skills and escalation of care interventions.
This module does not allow the student to work at an advanced clinical practice level since it does not offer advanced health assessment or diagnostic skills. This module aims to enhance a practitioner¿s level of clinical practice.

During this module students will be introduced to the diagnostic consultation as well as clinical decision making skills. The module adopts a case based approach; students will be introduced to a weekly clinical case that is critically reviewed from the diagnostic assessment all the way through to the therapeutic management. The student will learn to adapt the consultation to include any scenario, preparing for advanced practice in their clinical settings. Emphasis will be upon reasoned differential diagnoses and the bio-clinical reasoning underlying the management of a holistic consultation.
