Theories and Perspectives in Social Work
The module provides the basis for understanding social work theories and perspectives for informing contemporary social work practice in a Welsh context. The module critically considers the concepts and explanations of social work theories and psychosocial perspectives from other disciplines that contribute to the social work knowledge base and its application to ethically-minded practice with service users and carers. Particular attention will be given to methods of case-work, group work, community work, and psycho-social work. Emphasis will be placed on practice in the Welsh context and the translation of theoretical perspectives to methods and tools in practice.

Social Work in Practice 2
This module will build on the assessment skills of collecting, selecting and testing of information learned at Level 1 and introduce further themes. These include the importance of decision making in a variety of settings and the influence that time pressures can exert. Particular attention will be given to this from a Welsh perspective, in an interagency context, including the factors and processes that facilitate service integration, collaboration and partnership when working with other statutory agencies as well as independent and voluntary sector services. The module will also address the nature of both risk and harm that is associated with intervention in the lives of vulnerable individuals and groups. It will include practical exercises in the use of different approaches to assessment.

The module draws together aspects of earlier modules that have looked at the law, theory, social work practice and values and applies them to children in particular sets of circumstances. Child protection, `looked after children¿, the Integrated Children¿s System and youth justice will receive particular attention.

Undertaking and Using Social Work Research for Practice
This module introduces you to the world of research in social work and social care, showing how evidence shapes practice, planning, and decision making. You¿ll explore the different ways information is gathered and used, and begin to understand why research is such a vital part of improving services and supporting communities.
You¿ll gain an accessible introduction to qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods approaches, learning how each can be applied to real life social work contexts. From interviews and case studies to surveys and statistical analysis, you¿ll discover how different methods provide unique insights into the lives of citizens and the challenges they face.
Alongside theory, you¿ll get hands on experience working with a diverse range of social work and social justice relevant statistical datasets at local, national and international levels and developing ICT skills that are essential for modern practice. By the end of the module, you¿ll not only understand the principles of research but also feel confident in applying them to your own studies and future professional work.

This module gives you the opportunity to build a strong foundation in social work theories and perspectives, helping you to confidently apply them to contemporary practice in Wales. You¿ll explore key ideas from social work and related disciplines, creating a rich knowledge base to support ethical, person centred practice with citizens and carers.
Alongside theory, you¿ll focus on practical methods that are central to effective social work, including motivational interviewing, positive behavioural support, and crisis intervention. These approaches will be introduced in accessible ways, allowing you to see how they can be applied in real world practice to support individuals and communities.
Throughout the module, we¿ll place special emphasis on the Welsh context, guiding you to translate theoretical perspectives into practical tools and methods that strengthen your professional journey. By the end, you¿ll have the confidence to connect theory and practice, and the skills to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those you work with.

Critical Practice in Child Care and Law
The central premise of this module is that for practitioners to undertake critical practice they must first develop `criticality¿; an open stance that enables the practitioner to reflect on the context of practice, their own experiences and values as well as the differing perspectives of others. `Criticality¿ is promoted through, for example, personal reflection, reading, research, discussion, debate and analysis.
During the module students are encouraged to critically reflect on a wide range of issues together with staff, visiting practitioners, service users and peers. The order in which topics and issues are introduced is arranged so that students are able to gain an understanding of the wider context of childcare practice before working through complex case studies of individual children. Students begin by examining international, national and regional childcare issues. They then examine key childcare legislation and policy before focusing on safeguarding and, in particular, child protection. Specific topics relating to childhood vulnerability are then considered, for example, `State accommodation¿/adoption of children, `youth justice¿ and `young carers¿. Special attention is given to preventative social work.

Undertaking & Using Social Work Research for Practice
In this engaging and practical module, you¿ll explore what it means to be `research-minded¿¿a vital skill for any reflective and effective social work practitioner. Together, we¿ll unpack how evidence-based practice informs decision-making, and you¿ll develop your existing knowledge or even learn for the first time about social work research methods. You¿ll dive into social work research case studies from social work researchers, practitioners and Social Care Wales, learning how they designed and carried out research using quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods of data collection and analysis. We¿ll also reflect on the ethical and value-based dimensions of research, helping you understand how to conduct studies that are both rigorous, respectful and in alignment with social work values and ethics.
This module isn¿t just theoretical¿you¿ll get hands-on experience working with statistical datasets and digital tools, building your confidence in using ICT for research. By the end, you¿ll be well-prepared to take on your own empirical or desk-based dissertation in the second year of your Master¿s journey.

Social Work Skills and Knowledge for Practice 2
The heart of this module is about giving you the chance to take part in a social work placement and meet the requirements set by Social Care Wales during your 80 day placement. The teaching is designed to get you ready for that experience. You¿ll learn what¿s expected of you in terms of academic work alongside your placement, how to maintain professional conduct, and why critically reflective practice, theory, legislation, and anti discriminatory/anti oppressive approaches are so important in the Welsh context.
You¿ll also have the chance to think about your own learning needs before you go out on placement, and work through ways of handling any challenges or difficulties that might come up.
During your 80 day placement, you¿ll build skills, knowledge, and practice competence in line with the National Occupational Standards (NOS) for a level 2 placement, while upholding the Code of Professional Practice for Social Care Workers. You¿ll gain real experience working with citizens who need care and support, as well as their carers. Your practice will be supervised and assessed by a practice educator, and you¿ll take part in a `recall¿ day to reflect on your placement experience and see how the concepts you¿ve studied connect to real world practice.
