After an award-winning career as a journalist and magazine editor, Emma Spacey was inspired to become a secondary school teacher whilst working with school outreach programmes such as Swansea University’s Reaching Wider. Emma taught in a number of Secondary schools in the Swansea area and worked extensively on STEM programmes before joining the School of Education as ITE Lecturer (Chemistry). She is also an experienced examiner for AQA and WJEC exam boards.
Education should allow equal participation of people from all identity groups. Recent legislation in Wales and social justice campaigns have raised particular awareness of under representation and discrimination against students for reasons of race, gender or sexuality. For some children and young people, the intersectionality of all three identity markers (race, gender and sexuality) causes even greater alienation from education. This module aims to examine the socio-historic context of Wales in terms of race, gender and sexuality. In particular, it looks at how these can be challenged in the future design of educational materials through more selective use of texts and role models. This module will also encourage students to think about their own identities, positions and responsibilities in relation in their use of language and interactions with others. It will also provide some practical tools for increasing reprentation of different identity groups in all aspects of education.
This module develops student teachers as Research-informed reflective practitioners through a range of learning experiences designed to enhance the critical awareness that new entrants to the teaching profession will need to refine their teaching, influence their pupils and ensure they advance in their learning (Welsh Government circular 001/2018). Learning to teach involves drawing upon several different sources of professional knowledge; intellectually based knowledge (learning `about¿ teaching) knowledge gained through `indirect¿ practice, the knowledge of expert practitioners, integrated knowledge (learning `through¿ teaching) and personal knowledge (Furlong 2015; EWC 2023). Student teachers will develop an understanding of, and ability to employ, effective strategies for teaching and learning in their subject area and Area of Learning Experience (AoLE). Taught sessions will focus on the application of subject knowledge to support an understanding of pedagogy and curriculum design to promote the four purposes of Education as outlined in the new curriculum (Donaldson, 2015). Student teachers will address issues relevant to the wider context of the Welsh Government policy on the curriculum and the National Frameworks for Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Competence. The module will ensure that students gain an understanding of current legislation, including an understanding of the anti-racist Wales action plan, the Additional Learning Needs Code and an understanding of the Curriculum Cymreig and Welsh language requirements. They will also develop and consolidate teaching strategies to ensure they are appropriate to their subject area/AoLE with a strong focus on lesson and unit planning, taking into account those issues which impact on planning for effective teaching and learning in their subject. Student teachers will develop an awareness and understanding of research skills and research literacy that will help them throughout their professional career and continuously develop their approaches to learning and teaching to maximise the impact on learner outcomes. Student teachers will examine research literature and explore their own practice through the implementation of a close to practice research project to systematically develop their professional practice and respond creatively to the needs of all pupils. In doing so they will develop their reflective skills which will ensure that they are engaged with up-to-date evidence and the skills of research inquiry.

This module is for students with an interest in teaching, science communication, and medicine. Students will complete an enquiry-based research project, based within the field of pedagogy or science communication, with guidance from an academic supervisor. Projects may be completed in collaboration with local schools/colleges, community groups, science outreach programmes (e.g. Oriel Science), in clinical/patient settings, or within Higher Education. Students will engage with workshops and digital resources to introduce various themes surrounding pedagogy and science communication to prepare them for their research project. Students will be required to critically analyse their research findings and produce a teaching or outreach activity/resource. Students will refine their oral and written communication skills to graduate level through an oral presentation and dissertation.
Mae'r modiwl hwn ar gyfer myfyrwyr sydd â diddordeb mewn addysgu, cyfleu gwyddoniaeth a meddygaeth. Bydd myfyrwyr yn cwblhau prosiect ymchwil sy'n seiliedig ar ymholiadau, ym maes addysgeg neu gyfleu gwyddoniaeth, o dan arweiniad goruchwyliwr academaidd. Gellir cwblhau prosiectau mewn cydweithrediad ag ysgolion/colegau lleol, grwpiau cymunedol, rhaglenni allgymorth gwyddoniaeth (e.e. Oriel Science), mewn lleoliadau clinigol/cleifion neu ym myd Addysg Uwch. Bydd myfyrwyr yn ymgysylltu â gweithdai ac adnoddau digidol i gyflwyno themâu amrywiol ynghylch addysgeg a chyfleu gwyddoniaeth i'w paratoi ar gyfer eu prosiect ymchwil. Gofynnir i fyfyrwyr ddadansoddi canfyddiadau eu hymchwil yn feirniadol a llunio gweithgaredd/adnodd addysgu neu allgymorth. Bydd myfyrwyr yn mireinio eu sgiliau cyfathrebu llafar ac ysgrifenedig i lefel raddedig drwy roi cyflwyniad poster a llunio traethawd hir.
