‘Flip the Streets’ is a project run by Swansea University, funded by Race Council Cymru, in collaboration with Swansea Council, which aims to increase resilience to hate in the local community.

Dr Lella Nouri, an Associate Professor of Criminology at Swansea, leads on the project, which provides a platform for young, local people and the wider community, to showcase how their creativity can enhance real change in their community.

On Saturday 20th of May, young people from the Manselton Community Centre expressed their desire for an anti-racist community by painting the Centre’s walls with their own artwork inspired by the Welsh Anti-Racist Action Plan and Black History Wales.

The 7–14-year-olds are part of the Youth Group at the Centre, and wanted to oppose the hate-fuelled graffiti that had been recently put on its walls, while spreading the message of an anti-racist Wales.

The project and participants engaged with local South Wales PCSOs, Prevent Officers and students from Swansea University, who were also joined by parents, councillors and the local community on the day.

Lella was also recently awarded for her work in this area, in the Social and Humanitarian Category at the Ethnic Minority Welsh Women Achievement Association Awards, and has been developing a new app, Streetsnap, which revolutionises the capture of hate visuals by frontline practitioners, and will help inform community interventions across Wales, by simplifying communications between partner organisations.
