Rebecca Elms the undergraduate who carried out a placement for South Wales MS Therapy Centre

The Challenge

South Wales MS Therapy Centre wanted to add additional support to the team responsible for raising finance for its new centre; a student placement to look at potential revenue streams, identify the best fit and write the applications.

Meeting the Challenge

Swansea University’s Employment Zone team scoped out the project and identified the need for a ‘charity bid writer’; working with South Wales MS Therapy centre to understand the role requirements and what was needed in terms of skills and experience.

The team helped draft the advert and promoted it via the dedicated Employment Zone jobs board and social media channels. Once the applications were received the team assisted in the shortlisting of candidates and helped to facilitate the interviews.

Following an interview, Rebecca Elms, an undergraduate studying for a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Classical Civilisation, was recruited for the placement.

Successful Outcomes

As well as greatly enhancing her own personal development, Rebecca made a huge impact in the organisation. In her short time working for South Wales MS Therapy Centre Rebecca initiated a number of successful funding bids that generated an additional £20,000 of funding for the charity.

"Working for the MS Therapy Centre was a great experience. The staff were lovely and Christine, the manager, was really supportive and helpful throughout my placement. I was a charity bid writer for the centre which meant I spent my time sourcing and applying for funds to go towards the new centre. I gained experience in administrative duties as well as practically applying the writing skills I have learnt from my degree. It was great experience and I would not have had the opportunity without the Employment Zone team." Rebecca Elms, BA English Literature and Classical Civilisation
