Next Steps After Swansea

After graduating, I worked as a Health and Wellbeing Coach in a hybrid role, delivering programmes to support physical activity, stress management, and healthy lifestyle behaviours. I carried out biopsychosocial assessments to set personalised goals and provided tailored support through one-to-one coaching, workshops, and exercise classes.

Current Role
Exercise Specialist in Oncology (NHS) & Personal Trainer, Nuffield Health

Niamh Allington

I currently work as an Exercise Specialist in Oncology with the NHS, designing and delivering individualised exercise programmes for cancer patients both before and after surgery. I work closely with physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, and medical staff to provide holistic care, and I also contribute to research exploring the impact of exercise on cancer outcomes. Alongside this role, I work as a Personal Trainer at Nuffield Health in Surrey, supporting non-clinical clients to achieve their health and fitness goals through safe, effective training.

Impact of Swansea
My degree at Swansea gave me a strong foundation in exercise prescription and the confidence to adapt programmes for a wide range of populations. Internships across both elite sport and community health settings provided invaluable hands-on experience and helped me develop a versatile skill set. These opportunities enabled me to stand out in applications and secure a role within an innovative and expanding NHS service.

Highlights & Advice
A career highlight has been supporting patients through their cancer journey and seeing them ring the bell to mark being cancer-free — a moment that never loses its impact.
My advice to students is to throw yourself into every opportunity available. There is no such thing as too much experience.
