BSc Sport and Exercise Science, 2019-2022

Next Steps After Swansea

After graduating, I spent a month interrailing across Europe — the perfect “work hard, play hard” summer. I then completed an MSc in Physiotherapy at the University of Birmingham, graduating with Merit and serving as Course Representative during the two-year programme.

Current role

Physiotherapist, University Hospitals Bristol and Weston

I’m now a rotational physiotherapist working across a wide range of specialisms in the public sector.

My role includes respiratory care — often as the on-call physio in ICU — supporting patients with musculoskeletal sports injuries, and assisting neurology patients with community rehabilitation and prehabilitation after strokes. The variety keeps my work dynamic, and I particularly enjoy the ongoing CPD opportunities that continue to challenge and develop my practice. Swansea helped instil a mindset of questioning and lifelong learning which I carry into my career every day.

Impact of Swansea

The BSc programme at Swansea was incredibly supportive — you’re treated as a person, not a number. Lecturers were attentive to individual learning needs, and modules such as Strength & Conditioning and Biomechanics gave me fantastic transferable skills for physiotherapy. The environment encouraged curiosity and helped build the confidence I needed to pursue further study and a healthcare career.

Highlight

A stand-out highlight was the sports nutrition glucose monitoring lab — eating too many doughnuts and milkshakes before jumping on a rowing machine! I don’t think I’ve ever felt so sick, but it was one of the best laughs with my course mates.

Advice

My advice is simple: don’t be afraid to ask questions — none of them are silly. Get involved wherever you can, and attend face-to-face lectures because they really sharpen your analytical skills.
