Remote Study Setup

Userbrain captures your feedback using a Chrome extension. This records your screen and audio.

Setup instructions: 

• Check you have a stable wifi connection.
• Open the invitation email and click url to start the test. You will need to use Chrome Browser and follow the prompts to install the Userbrain Extension.
• When you see a welcome message and follow the prompts to enable audio and screen sharing.  
• You can now read the task instructions by clicking a circular Icon on the right (in chrome top menu) and start providing feedback. 

• If you’d like to pause the session at any point you can click 'Pause' on the 'Task Panel' on the right.
• Please complete all tasks, when you reach the final task you can finish the test and upload the test.
• All your tests are uploaded automatically after you finish the last task.

Remember to think aloud - It's really important to talk about what you are thinking and what you are doing on screen.

Setup instructions: 

1. Check you have a strong wifi connection.
2. Open the Research Study Email and click"Start the Study" in Chrome and follow the prompts to 'Install' the 'Participate Extension'.
3. When you see a 'Welcome message', click 'Get Started' and follow the prompts to enable audio, screen and camera recording.  
4. You can now read the instructions on the 'Task/Instructions Panel' (Chrome window on the right) and start providing feedback on our product. 
5. If you’d like to pause the session at any point you can click 'Pause' on the 'Task/Instructions Panel' (Chrome window )on the right.
6. When you are ready to end the session, click 'End' on the Task/Instructions Panel on the right.
7. Remember to click 'End Session' agin to reconfirm.

1. Check your WiFi Connection is strong and steady.
2. Click the "Start the Study" button on your Android phone sent in the research study email.
3. Install the Participate App, when it prompts you. 
4. Tap on the above Self-test link again once the app has downloaded.
5. Tap 'I already have Participate'
6. Tap 'Get Started'.
7. Connect your headset for good sound quality.
8. Enter your name and email address for the Researcher's records and tap 'Next'
9. Flick toggle buttons to 'Allow' camera and mic recording.
10. Close any apps and websites with sensitive info like passwords etc.
11. Flick toggle button to 'Allow' screen recording.
12. Tap 'Start Now' and then "Next". 
13. Tap 'Open setting" and flick toggle button to grant permission to display small "Hand icon" on your screen. 
14. Slide and tap the 'Hand icon' to start your test.
15. Provide feedback on our website / prototype / app.
    You can:
    - Tap 'Instructions' for your Researcher's tasks and instructions
    - Tap 'Pause Session' to pause or end the test.
    - Tap 'Hand icon' at any time for 'Instructions' or to 'Pause/End'
16. To end the session, tap on the Participate 'yellow hand' icon on your screen and tap 'Pause Session' and 'End Session'.
17. Tap 'End session' again, to reconfirm.
18. Wait till you see stars on your screen. Tap "Done" to close the test session.

Please follow these steps to start testing: 

1. Check if your WiFi connection is strong.
2. Open this link [SelfTest Link] on your phone. 
3. Tap 'Install Participate' and install the App.
4. Tap on the link again once the Participate App has downloaded.
5. Tap 'I already have Participate,' this time.
6. Tap 'Get Started.'
7. Connect your headset with a built in microphone and tap 'Next.'
8. Enter your name and email address and tap 'Next.'
9. Switch the toggle button to green and tap 'Allow,' and then 'Next' to allow 'Notifications.'
10. Tap 'OK' to allow 'Camera Recording,' and then tap 'Next.' (Camera is optional. So you can choose to 'Not Enable' Camera).
11. Follow the setup steps in the app to 'Record your Screen' and 'Turn on Mic':
    - Tap/Switch On Mic (Red means "On").
    - Tap 'Start Broadcast.'
    - Wait for 3 seconds.
12. Slide and tap the 'Yellow Hand icon Bubble' to 'Start' providing feedback on our product. 
13. Provide feedback on our website / prototype / app:
    If you're testing a website / url-based prototype:
    - Tap 'Landing Page' for the website / prototype you are testing.
    - Tap 'Pause Session' to pause/resume the session (to enter login credentials etc).
    - Tap 'Hand icon' at any time for 'Instructions' or to 'Pause.'
    If you're testing an App or App-based prototype:
    - Navigate away from the Participate App to the App you're required to test.
    - Once you're done testing just navigate back to the Participate App.
14. Tap the 'Red Button' (or "Red Bar") on top of your screen to End the session. 
15. Tap 'Stop' to reconfirm.
16. Remember to click 'End session' again. All done.

We use a platform called UsabilityHub to get quick feedback on designs before we prototype them. UsabilityHub supports mutliple research types including 5 second tests, preference tests and first click tests and is unmoderated so feedback can be given at anytime.

No chrome extensions of mobile app installs are required for UsabilityHub and all responses are anonymous, no email is linked to a reponse.

A Typical Workflow is as follows:

1. Click the link within the Research Study Email
2. Follow on screen instructions e.g. Which of these designs do you prefer
3. Answer any follow up questions
4. Submit your responses
