HSC103A Professional and Clinical Practice for Audiology

This module provides an essential introduction to clinical practice for students enrolled in the BSc (Hons) Healthcare Science (Audiology) programme. It is designed to support your transition from academic study to the professional healthcare environment. You will undertake a 10-week clinical placement within specialist NHS Audiology departments, where you will begin to develop the practical skills, professional behaviours, and clinical understanding required for future practice. In addition, you will gain valuable insight into related healthcare disciplines through rotational experiences in areas such as Neurophysiology, Ophthalmology, and other interprofessional settings. By the end of the module, you will have a clearer understanding of the Audiology profession and its role within the wider healthcare system, laying a strong foundation for your ongoing clinical learning and development.
SHC200 Applied Neurophysiology and Instrumentation

This module will provide a detailed knowledge of neurophysiological measurement techniques and instrumentation.
SHC226 Neuroanatomy and Physiology

This module will provide a detailed knowledge of molecular, cellular and physiological processes underlying neurophysiology and neuropathology.
SHC227 Evoked Potentials

This module will provide students with the opportunity to understand the electrical potentials produced by the nervous system and their use in determination of nervous system function.
SHC228 Clinical Neurophysiology

This module will provide the student with an understanding of the electroencephalogram (EEG) and its measurement in normal situations.
SHC230 Professional Practice 2

This module follows from the year 1 module SHC150 Professional Practice 1 and further develops some topics as well as introducing others. The material is designed to provide support knowledge for the healthcare science student in their professional practice.
SHC232 Instrumentation Signal Processing and Imaging

This is a module for students following Healthcare Science programmes that details the theory and application of physiological measurement and imaging in healthcare.
SHC300 Specialist Neurophysiology

This module aims to provide the student with an overview of nerve conduction studies (NCS), electromyography (EMG), sleep study, polysomnography and the multiple sleep latency test (MSLT).
SHC323 Abnormal EEG and Interpretation

This module aims to provide the student with an in depth understanding of the use of the EEG in determining neurological disease.
SHC325 Neuropathology

This module aims to provide the student with an in depth understanding of neurological pathologies and their treatment.
