About

Dr Del Sol is a Molecular Biologist interested in exploring bacterial genomes, using this knowledge to  understand how microbes interact with their environments and control basic processes like cell division or pathogenesis. Additional research interests are focused on manipulating protein nanocages of microbial origin for novel drug delivery formulations

Areas Of Expertise

  • Microbial genetics
  • Gene manipulation
  • Protein engineering
  • Microbial genomics
  • Protein nanocages
  • Insect microbiome
  • Streptomyce

Career Highlights

Teaching Interests

Dr Del Sol contributes to several modules within the Genetics and Biochemistry degree programmes at Swansea University.  His main teaching interests lie within the areas of Molecular Biology methods, Genome sequence analyses and Gene manipulation. He acts as academic mentor for under- and post-graduate students and supervises several undergraduate and masters research projects each year.

Research

Current research activities:

  • Engineering protein nanocages for controlled assembly of modular scaffolds with bioactive properties.
  • Elucidating insect symbionts population  dynamics using hologenome sequencing.
  •  Profile microbiome composition to guide the design of environmentally friendly pesticide strategies against insect pests.
Award Highlights

2019 Excellence in Team Teaching Award (ETTA) for work on the BSc Genetics programme.
