Dr Sarah Rees is curriculum lead for Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM), and admissions lead for the GEM and Physician Associate programmes. She also leads the movement theme within GEM and teaches musculoskeletal biology across several programmes within the School. Her research interests are within the field of cell matrix biology, with a focus on musculoskeletal tissues in health and disease. Sarah is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA), and acts as an assessor for the University’s HEA fellowship scheme. She is currently an external examiner for the GEM course at Birmingham Medical School.

PM-154 Human Physiology

Human physiology is the study of how our body works in an integrated way. A central principle of human physiology is homeostasis, the maintenance of a relatively stable internal environment. Failure to maintain homeostasis disrupts normal function that may lead to disease (or pathophysiology). Students will be taught the key concepts of homeostasis in the physiological systems of the body, enabling the student to understand the consequences of pathophysiology to human health. Emphasis will be given to how malfunction of key physiological systems gives rise to disease, using specific examples to enable students to appreciate the relationship between physiology/anatomy and medicine. Fundamental principles of physiology will be illustrated with appropriate clinical examples and during lectures and in practical assignments. Students will gain practical experience in assessing physiological function during four laboratory-based exercises. The impact of pathophysiology of such systems will be assessed through clinical case studies.

This module provides medical students with the foundation clinical skills required for the practice of medicine. Based on the professional skills domain of the GMC¿s Outcomes for Graduates (2020), and Outcomes for Graduates ¿ Practical Skills and Procedures (2020), this module enables students to develop their skills within a safe but clinically-focused environment.
PM-349D Doctor as Scholar and Scientist 2

This module further develops the student's scientific knowledge, building on the foundations laid in Year 1. Based on the professional knowledge domain of the GMC's "Outcomes for Graduates (2020)" this module enables students to enhance their scientific knowledge and understanding of its importance to clinical practice within a clinical context.

This module enables medical students to integrate their scientific knowledge and clinical skills in order to apply it within the context of clinical practice, thus enhancing their ability to practice medicine. PMBM07 Biomedical Sciences in Healthcare

The role of biomedical sciences in the delivery and provision of health care will be explored and critically evaluated within this module. This module is designed to provide you with the fundamental and principal concepts of Health Care, specifically to support the role of Biomedical Science, from understanding the principles and organization of the NHS to exploring valued based healthcare. It will provide learning activities based around the various disciplines within biomedical science(s) within health care, explore the importance of IBMS and HCPC practice standards, understanding the patient experience, working as part of a multidisciplinary team and to critically explore professionalism within healthcare delivery.
