Human Physiology
The human body is a complex, integrated system that relies on precise physiological mechanisms to maintain homeostasis and sustain life. This module provides an in-depth introduction to human physiology, covering the fundamental principles that govern the function of cells, tissues, and organ systems. Students will explore the physiological processes that underpin human health, gaining insight into how the body¿s systems work together to respond to internal and external challenges.
The module begins with an overview of key physiological concepts, including homeostasis, feedback mechanisms, and the integration of body systems. Students will examine the structure and function of key organ systems, including the nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, renal, endocrine, and musculoskeletal systems. Topics will include neural signalling and communication, cardiovascular dynamics and circulation, gas exchange and respiratory control, digestion and nutrient absorption, renal function and fluid balance, endocrine regulation of metabolism, and the mechanics of movement.
Emphasis will be placed on understanding physiological responses to environmental changes, exercise, and disease. Students will also explore the cellular and molecular basis of physiological function, and the role of hormones in systemic regulation. Additionally, the module will introduce fundamental concepts in pathophysiology, highlighting how disruptions in physiological processes can lead to disease.
Through a combination of lectures, dry laboratory practical sessions, and interactive workshops, students will develop both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in human physiology. Hands-on sessions will provide experience with physiological measurements and experimental techniques, reinforcing the relevance of human physiology to medical science, biomedical research, and healthcare applications.

Doctor as Scholar and Scientist 1
This module introduces you to the scientific foundations of medical practice. You will explore how the body functions in health and what happens in disease, drawing on key areas such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, and pathology. Alongside this, you will examine how psychological and social factors shape health behaviours, illness experiences, and healthcare delivery. The module also develops your understanding of population health and epidemiology, helping you interpret data on disease patterns and health improvement. Throughout, you will learn how scientific evidence is generated, evaluated, and applied in medicine, and how to integrate knowledge from multiple disciplines to explain clinical problems. By the end of the module, you will have built a strong foundation of scientific understanding to support your ongoing clinical learning and future medical practice.

Doctor as a Practitioner 1
This module provides you with the foundation clinical skills required for safe and effective medical practice. You will develop the ability to carry out basic consultations, communicate effectively with patients and colleagues, perform practical procedures, respond to medical emergencies, and prescribe safely within a simulated and real-world clinical environment. Learning is delivered in a safe, scaffolded, and integrated manner, using case-based sessions, simulated patients, and supervised clinical placements. The module also includes a session on Medicine in Wales led by clinical and academic staff. Clinical skills developed here are reinforced throughout the programme and integrated with the scientific and professional knowledge delivered in the Doctor as a Scientist and Scholar and Doctor as a Professional modules.

This module extends and deepens the student¿s engagement with the scientific foundations of medicine, building on the fundamental knowledge developed in the Year 1 5 Doctor as a Scholar and a Scientist module. Based on the Professional Knowledge domain of the GMC¿s Outcomes for Graduates (2020), it enables students to apply and integrate biomedical, psychological, social, and population health sciences to clinical contexts with increasing independence and critical insight.
Students will enhance their ability to evaluate scientific evidence, apply research-informed reasoning to clinical decision-making, and appreciate the dynamic relationship between scientific discovery and patient care. Through a case-based and spiral curriculum, students will consolidate and expand their understanding of normal and abnormal human function, preparing them to translate scientific principles into safe, effective, and compassionate medical practice.

Biomedical Sciences in Healthcare
The role of biomedical sciences in the delivery and provision of health care will be explored and critically evaluated within this module. This module is designed to provide you with the fundamental and principal concepts of Health Care, specifically to support the role of Biomedical Science, from understanding the principles and organization of the NHS to exploring valued based healthcare. It will provide learning activities based around the various disciplines within biomedical science(s) within health care, explore the importance of IBMS and HCPC practice standards, understanding the patient experience, working as part of a multidisciplinary team and to critically explore professionalism within healthcare delivery.
