About

Iain studied Biochemistry (undergraduate) at Cardiff University and also completed his doctorate studying the altitudinal adaptations of earthworms. Iain then took a role as senior bioinformatician at Wales Gene Park, before taking up the role of Lead for bioinformatics and operations. Iain is now working to expand bioinformatic knowledge and capabilities within Swansea University with a focus on genomics and is also developing a training strategy in healthcare bioinformatics.

Iain is currently developing a novel strategy for the training and development of the next generation of healthcare bioinformaticians in Wales through the creation of a bespoke course. In addition, iain is keen on expanding staff and student knowledge and capabilities in bioinformatics, coding and experimental design.

PM-361 Bioinformatics: From Sequence to Function

The ever increasing availability of genome sequences and protein structure data demands that molecular biologists are proficient at performing extensive data analyses to guide and support traditional laboratory-based research. This Module will provide the theoretical basis and practical training on computational tools currently used to assemble and interrogate genome sequences, infer gene and protein functions, and to examine protein structure data.
PMGM00 Bioinformatics for Genome Analysis

The module will cover the fundamental principles of informatics and bioinformatics applied to clinical genomics, find and use major genomic and genetic data resources; use software packages, in silico tools, databases and literature searches to align sequence data to the reference genome, critically assess, annotate and interpret findings from genetic and genomic analyses. Theoretical sessions will be coupled with practical assignments of analysing and annotating predefined data sets.
