Academic Pre-Sessional (12 Weeks)

This Academic Pre-sessional course will build your confidence and enable you to begin your undergraduate or postgraduate programme with a good understanding of the expectations of academic study in a UK university. The course will help you to develop the following:

• General English language skills
• Academic language skills
• Integrated reading and writing skills
• Listening and note-taking skills for academic lectures
• Academic speaking skills for presentations, seminars, and tutorials
• Academic research and referencing skills
• An understanding of academic expectations at Swansea University
• Critical thinking skills
• Exam skills

The Academic Pre-sessional gives you everything you need to maximise your confidence and improve your language and study skills before you begin your degree at Swansea University.

Teaching:

The Pre-sessional is a full-time programme of study from Monday to Friday, and classes can be accessed either in-person or online, depending on the course you have chosen.

Each week includes 15 hours of face to face tuition and you will also be required to complete around 10 hours of self-study. an individual tutorial. Each student has a

personal tutor who will meet you regularly to help you to develop individual targets to achieve your academic goals.

Assessment:

During the course, you will complete 3 modules, each with a different focus, and your progress will be tracked by continuous assessments throughout.

You will work towards building a portfolio of coursework in your final module which will be submitted at the end of the programme. The portfolio provides detailed evidence of your language level and skills, your academic skills, and whether you are ready to begin academic study at a UK university. This work will make up 70% of your final grade.

An end of course exam will also be taken, and the results from this will provide the remaining 30% of your final grade.

NB. Attendance on this course does not guarantee progression onto your degree programme. If you have a conditional offer based on your level of English, you will have to achieve the required standard through the programme assessment and examination.
